What happened was Armin Tamzarian got into a motorcycle crash on his way out of Springfield and the show has been going on in HIS mind. Everyone reduced to the surface level only he knew of them, ideas he'd find funny. He even reconned himself back into the life he knew in stupid fashion.

I remember OJ updates preceding the new reruns of The Simpsons.
It’s weird that the advertising was still so Bart-centric in ‘94. It probably wasn’t until “Who Shot Mr. Burns?” that people recognized The Simpsons as great ensemble show. Then it became “Man, is Homer dumb and wacky!” sometime in the late ‘90s.

Looked it up and you have an accurate memory. "Who Shot Mr. Burns?" aired the same night as Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals, which had Ewing missing a game winning layup at the buzzer.
