Even though this line of thinking has slowed up in recent years (decades?), it was still promoted for several generations after the civil war, thus leading parents to pass it down to their children, etc. I arguably live in the most liberal state in the south, I can only imagine if my family had stayed in Alabama or Tennessee where I lived as a tot.

I will say even as recently as 2005-2008 when I was a high school history teacher in Kentucky our textbooks and professional development on the Reconstruction era were tilted toward the Dunning School narrative more closely that you would think, although maybe not as blatantly as when my father in law was in school.

There was a fairly impromptu meeting in my town last night with our state legislator about removing a Confederate memorial from downtown (Alexandria, VA). My friend went and he said it got heated. The VA state legislature has passed a law banning the city council (who wants to move it) from moving it.
