IIRC, this was the final PPV appearance of HHH's (superior) long tights. He switched to the traditional brief-style trunks soon after, helping to develop the "now they're main event serious" jokes about talent changing their gear just before a ME push.

I can remember him not being able to really find a look the first few months of his heel turn. Iirc, he was wearing stuff like leather pants with an unbottoned dress shirt and wearing shades. Also super weird to see him as a background guy during the Corporate Ministry stuff where's he's just mugging and smirking trying to get noticed

You can definitely see HHH mugging a ton during the Tyson angles.

I steal much of this from F4W's old history column, which seems to heavily lean into old AWA results, ignores JCP quite a bit, and often only mentions big matches from the occasional MSG. Making this odder however is SMW in Podunk, Nowhere is almost always mentioned in full. Just sayin' in case some good shit at NWA house shows is ignored or whatever.

The show was headlined by a blockbuster tag-team match as ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin and The Rock defeated The Undertaker and Triple H. This reminds me that the Friday before the show my friend was trying to sell a bunch of other kids on the idea that not only was the object of the Luna-Sable match to strip your opponent fully nude but that it was going to air as part of the Free-for-All. I think he also claimed the inferno match was going to be on the Free-for-All. I hope he wasn't too let down by what he actually got.

My brother ordered Unforgiven '98 and we both totally thought we were gonna see Sable's tits. Hey, I was 12 at the time so even though we didn't see them, watching her almost pop out of her bra was enough to make me rewind the tape over and over.

The great Chris Candido passed away tragically 16 years ago today. I always forget he was only 33 when he died.

a damn tragedy. I feel like he would have thrived and maybe finally gotten the mainstream recognition he deserved in the late ‘00s/early ‘10s if not for that freak accident.

hell he wouldn’t even be 50 now. I imagine he would have been one of the old guys on GCW shows.

WWF taped Saturday Night’s Main Event (WWE Network link) from the Edmund P. Joyce Center in South Bend, Indiana. The show aired four days later on NBC.
A curious bit of trivia: this is the first time in the show’s history that did not feature a Hulk Hogan match (he does appear in an interview segment). But the show did have the hook of airing footage of Hulk Hogan versus Andre the Giant from Wrestlemania III.
Kamala the Ugandan Giant defeated Jake “The Snake” Roberts. Macho Man Randy Savage defeated George “The Animal” Steele in a lumberjack match. The British Bulldogs (Davey Boy Smith & The Dynamite Kid) defeated The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart & Jim Neidhart) 2-0 in a best of three falls match for the WWF Tag Team Championship. The Bulldogs won the first fall via disqualification, meaning the titles did not change hands. Ricky Steamboat defeated Hercules by disqualification to retain the WWF Intercontinental Championship. The Can-Am Connection (Rick Martel & Tom Zenk) defeated Nikolai Volkoff & The Iron Sheik.

1990 WWF Saturday Night's Main Event: Austin, Texas:

- The Hart Foundation vs. The Rockers ended in a double DQ
- WWF World Champion The Ultimate Warrior defeated Haku

- Kevin Sullivan & Cactus Jack defeated WCW Tag Team Champions the Nasty Boys in a non-title match
- Ricky Steamboat defeated WCW US Champion Steve Austin in a non-title match

1994

Kwang and Adam Bomb explode!!!

1995 – WCW and NJPW presented the first day of the infamous ‘Collison in Korea’ event in May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea. The Koreans claimed 150,000 fans were in attendance for night one, making it comfortably the biggest attendance in wrestling history to that point. The record (Again, according to North Korean authorities) was broken 24 hours later with 190,000 fans supposedly attending night two. The main event of night one saw Shinya Hashimoto and Scott Norton battle to a 20-minute time limit draw for the IWGP Heavyweight Championship.

1996 – Scott Hall and Kevin Nash made their final WWF TV appearances for six years during the WWF In Your House ‘Good Friends Better Enemies‘ pay-per-view in Omaha, Nebraska. In the main event Shawn Michaels successfully retained the WWF Championship against Diesel in a No-Holds Barred Match. Also Razor Ramon lost to Vader and The Bodydonnas retained the WWF Tag Team Titles against The Godwinns. Owen Hart & The British Bulldog were victorious over Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts & Ahmed Johnson, and The Ultimate Warrior & Goldust Intercontinental Title match ended in a no-contest. On the Free-For-All Marc Mero picked up a disqualification win over the 1-2-3 Kid Sean Waltman due to a run-in from Hunter Hearst Helmsley.

1997 – Owen Hart defeated Rocky Maiva for the Intercontinental Title on an episode of WWF Raw from Omaha, Nebraska.

1998 -
What a wild card of talent.

2002 – Wrestling legend Lou Thesz passes away at the age of 86 following complications from triple heart bypass surgery.

2009 – Buddy Rose passed away from natural causes aged 56 in Vancouver, Washington

2012 http://www.profightdb.com/cards/extreme-rising/extreme-reunion-15592.html
Extreme Rising presents its debut show, Extreme Reunion from the Pennsylvania National Guard Armory in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Essentially presented as an ECW reboot, the show was, in a nutshell, a trainwreck. Terry Brunk, aka Sabu, and PJ Polaco, aka Justin Credible, were both removed from the show as neither man were in condition to perform. Keith Harris has a full review of the event here.
Just how bad was this show? It finished ahead of all other wrestling events for Wrestling Observer Newsletter's Worst Major Show of 2012, and finished behind only UFC 149 for that same award.
In a preshow dark match, Los Dramaticos (Dramatico #1 and Dramatico #2) defeated BLK Jeez & Ruckus. Little Guido & Tony Mamaluke defeated Stevie Richards & The Blue Meanie. CW Anderson defeated Al Snow. Axl Rotten defeated Balls Mahoney Gary Wolfe defeated Raven.

Extreme Rules 2012 doesn't get mentioned enough as one of the best non major WWE PPVs of the last 20 years. It's probably cause it feels like the pretty good but not quite as good sequel to MITB 2011 (which is THE best non major WWE PPV of the past 20 years or at worse, 1B to Vengeance '03) since they're from the same arena.

That was the era where Vince signed Tensai and was prepping him for a monster heel role, but then Brock came back and took the Thunder IIRC.

I also failed to mention the other day that Diesel defending against Bigelow on RAW was a big deal. I made sure to either go by my brother to watch it or had him tape it. It was a World title match on free TV! Who'da thunk it!?

Yeah, when I rewatched the '93 to '95 RAWs a few years back, I feel like Diesel Vs Bam Bam was the most hyped match that they've had on the show since the Perfect/Flair Career Match on the 2nd or 3rd episode. It was honestly probably just as if not more hyped than some of the Diesel's IYH World Title defenses Bam Bam's exile from the Million Dollar Corporation and face turn was one of those things that in that exact moment seemed like it was something they were planning on being a big storyline but quickly fizzled out. Kind of like Lord Tensai!

I feel that way about TLC 2011 and 2012. Both are great shows that don't get a lot of talk, the latter especially which is top to bottom one of my favorite PPVs of the last decade.

WWF B, C, and D Show thread crosspost.

This is one of the first title changes I can remember. It really did seem like a huge shock that Razor would drop the belt a little over a month after the epic ladder match. And even though he had the monster run in the Rumble, I think Diesel was *still* mostly thought of as the bodyguard.

Broke my heart as a HUGE Razor fan. I thought Diesel was so dominate he'd have it forever until the Summerslam match got Walter Payton involved. Then shit was on. But Razor vs Diesel is one of my favorite matches ever anyway.

Yeah. Transition from thinking of Diesel as bodyguard/part time wrestler to him being a potential future main eventer was lightning quick.

It's crazy but Diesel was BARELY involved at WrestleMania X. They really should have thrown him in the ten man tag. He could have easily replaced IRS or Martel. Maybe Shawn Michaels and Razor would have been more mindful of their time in that scenario.

After rewatching the '94 Rumble a few days ago I 100% know why he got the god push. It's incredible. As soon as he dumps Owen he's the biggest face for the first half of the match. Dibiase marking for him destroying Virgil is pretty good too.

I say swap out Earthquake and Adam Bomb for Diesel and the 123 Kid.

I wish that I had gotten back into wrestling 8 months earlier so I could have gone to Backlash ‘05. I vaguely knew about it and thought “Maybe I should go to see Hulk.” but ManchVegas was such a regular stop for WWE in the ‘00s that I dumbly thought there was a decent chance WWE would hold another PPV in New Hampshire someday.

And the only time I ever saw Hulk live was at Slammiversary 2013 cutting a promo on Aces and Eights. #regrets
