UFC Undisputed 09

I am probably going to have to sink a fair amount of time into the demo before I decide if I want to buy this or not. The tutorial was very long, but I appreciate how much detail was put into the game, and how many matches within the match it builds....just like a MMA match. For some reason, I went through the tutorial and then I decided to try a few matches. Apparently I forgot everything I just learned and my matches turned into a match of lets see who gets knocked out first. I did manage to land a couple of deadly elbow strikes and when it started showing the match highlights after the match, I really started to get into the entire experience. I know it is going to take some time and patience before I get the hang out of the counter system, and I have a feeling that higher difficulties are really going to make you work for your money.

So here's a question for people more in the know or playing the demo. I think the game looks really cool and I'd like to try it out, but I've never really watched UFC. Is this game going to be one that is playable for people that have little to no knowledge of the product, or will this strictly be a "for fans only" game?

Both - in a way.

I don't follow UFC or MMA religously, but I do like a good fighting game. If this game wasn't UFC and was just branded as a fighting game, I'd like it just as much. The training mode covers most of the game mechanics and allows you to get to grips with the game.

I'd say it definitely helps to have an understanding of MMA technique & strategy going in, if only to make the grappling aspect of the game more enjoyable and to be competitive on higher difficulty levels or online. However, I think anyone not as familiar with MMA could probably still pick up the striking aspect of the game fairly easily, and allow their understanding of the sport expand from there.

I can't get any kind of submission going, and completely forgot all of the clinch/takedown controls once I got into a fight. Didn't matter though because striking is hilarious. Punching the crap out of Chuck still hasn't gotten old.

Now I just need to react to black and white thing quicker...most of the time the guy just gets right back up.

If found the best way to get a submission is concentrate on side kicks to wear your opponent out, then go into a clinch then spinebuster the bastard. If your lucky he will be dazed following the spinebuster, then lock on the submission and spam buttons like fuck.

I knocked Shogun out in the first round with a spinning back fist when he ran in for a flying knee.

In the next fight, I had a two round slugfest against Shogun, who almost made a comeback after catching Chuck with a flying knee while Chuck taunted him. Shogun ended up getting knocked out with an overhand right with 15 seconds left.

I love this game.

Ive yet to make a fight last 3 rounds which is great. I also like that no matter how much you torture you opponent you can still get beat by a suprise submission.

I don't think its possible to go to a decision with Chuck/Shogun. 15 minutes of in-game time is a long time.

But I can't wait to play as a good wrestler and take my opponents to a Decision. It will piss off so many players online.

Having played the higher difficulties, I can definitely say that the submission system will need a patch to even out the AI's ability to escape pretty much everything you throw at them on the mat. This seems to be a widespread concern with other people who've played the demo, but I'm hoping an AI patch could be thrown together pretty easily.

You guys also have to remember that you've only started playing the game. It will no doubt take time to really master. I'm sure after a couple of months or so people will be able to armbar n00bs in the first ten seconds. This is standard for any video game, especially sports, it's just that MMA fans are generally nitpicky as hell and worrisome to boot, so they will always fret when things don't go amazing the first time out.

It isn't the player vs. player aspect of the game that seems to be the problem, rather that the computer's grappling AI is pretty much flawless at higher levels. Going for a submission on an opponent that isn't 100% gassed on Advanced or higher mean YOU WILL get reversed into a bad position And even if you do manage to avoid that by making sure the opponent has been sufficiently weakened, you're going to rub your thumb raw trying to spinning the stick fast enough to finish the submission. Comparatively, KOs & TKOs are much easier to come by.

UFC Undisputed 09

Yes, though that hasn't worked any better for me or anyone else I've talked to, aside from a game developer who may have ridiculous turbo fingers.

UFC Undisputed 09

I wish the subs weren't based on button mashing...it's always a stupid mechanic. Maybe a quicktime deal where you have to time button presses along with the submission animation. Destroying my hand to try and get an armbar is not fun.

UFC Undisputed 09

No more quicktime events in games, please. Swirling the analog stick is just fine by me.

The more I play the demo the more comfortable I'm getting at the controls. I still can't really get submissions, but I use Chuck in most fights and he's not exactly Mr. Kimura.

UFC Undisputed 09

Yes quicktime events need to go away for a while. I like playing games, not making sure i hit buttons at a certain time so i get to watch animations.

UFC Undisputed 09

How is it playing a game if you're just bashing away at four buttons? Maybe quicktime isn't the best solution, but there has to be a better mechanic than "hit every face button as fast as possible".

UFC Undisputed 09

Yes its flawed, but quicktime events have become so popular lately that i cant stand them. When i get to a FMV/in game cinematic i like to enjoy watching the story progress not panic when i suddenly have to press X or die.

Another thing I'm a bit disappointed in is that all fighters and CAF's wiill be limited two one striking and one grappling style. This will make accurately depicting great BJJ'ers who can also wrestle (Maia, Jacare), or just to replicate how utterly useless some guys are in one area (MacDonald, Sanchez).

UFC Undisputed 09

The Demo was fun but the big problem I see is that sometimes locking on submissions and the overall ground game can be difficult enough to where 90% of the time people are going to give up on trying and just play the game like a button-mashing striking game, which for me was pretty successful on the demo.

I played out 10 straight matches, I lost the first match, but once I read the tutorial on striking, I knocked Liddell out using Shogun with no problem every single time after that. I scored a bunch of takedowns, but found getting into a dominant position on the ground and actually locking on submissions was a chore and it was always easier just to stand up, let Liddell up and then just KO him.

UFC Undisputed 09

Liddel seems to have the best takedowns as he is a wrestler class. I often found using Shogun trying to do a takedown ended with me being on my back.

UFC Undisputed 09

I've been playing on the highest difficulty and about 90% of the time if it stays standing I can KO Shogun. If it hits the ground however, I have almost no chance of submitting him. Ground and pound works okay for a bit but he sweeps me a lot and if he gets mount fucking forget about it. I spent 4 minutes with him postured up in my mount, I'd turn and give him my back and every time I tried to stand up he'd flip me back over and get mount again. Over and over.

UFC Undisputed 09

I've played the demo almost every day since I've downloaded it and it still hasn't gotten old even though it's the same two fighters. That's gotta be a good sign, doesn't it?

Less than two weeks. We need to get a TRTSM Fight Club going on Live.

UFC Undisputed 09

I'm down with that. I hadn't played the demo for almost a week until the other night. I didn't have as much fun as I had before, but I think that goes hand in hand with the fact that I was really rusty and lost several fights. I felt like I had gotten a lot worse in less than a week of not playing. So this is not the type of game you want to take any extended breaks from.

UFC Undisputed 09

I'd be down for that..would we be limited to only CAF's or would we pick a fighter or two in a given weight-class and use them ala Dynasty in NCAA / Madden?

UFC Undisputed 09

I'd be down if i could figure out a way to make my Michihiro Omigawa look angry enough.

UFC Undisputed 09

Once I get a new system I'd be down for it. I call Sylvia and Nakamura. Or I'll just have hopefully a good Gomi created.
