Orndorff wrestled a six man tag on March 20 and then did not wrestle again until June 2. Orndorff had suffered an arm injury and was working through it. I picture a scenario where Paul would work a WM match if he had too but if he didn't, he was going to take time off. So without a match, not appearing at WM III was probably the best option.

I agree, but a life edition of The Body Shop with Orndorff eating up ten minutes would've been a nice intermission.

I think the general consensus is Andre was going to the ring no matter what. Potentially even as a final match worst case scenerio.

- It appears the rumor is talked about in the early 2000s on message boards, but the evidence suggests Paul was off due to injury more than being the back up plan.

- He works just a few dates in Jan and those are nothing matches with George Steele, Tito and Koko.
- His TV matches in Jan/Feb is with Steele to push Macho Man's angle and a run in to aid Hercules w/ Billy Jerk Haynes.
- He DOES do an angle w/ Hogan and Kamala in Philly.
- He works Pedro in a match shown on the April 3 Prime Time. That would be a thing to check out and see what Heenan and Monsoon have to say about any sort of storyline.
- He is on the SNME battle royal and Hogan chucks him.
- Dates are light in Feb overall.
- He and Hogan work a six man in Boston at the start of March. The Apters were pumped over the WWF having Hogan and Piper team a bunch heading into WM 3 given their history. This was one of the various six man mix and match line ups that WWF did with the upper card at this moment.
- Dark match job in Dayton, Ohio to Hogan in March.
- The blow off to the Philly angle w/ Hogan and Piper vs Orndorff and Kamala
- He and Bundy take part in a tag team tourney in Toronto that aired on Prime Time a day or 3 after WM 3.
- Chicago later March: The Crusher (sub. for the Junkyard Dog), George Steele, & Jake Roberts fought Paul Orndorff, King Harley Race, & the Honkytonk Man to a double disqualification
WWF World Champion Hulk Hogan (w/ Billy Jack Haynes) pinned Paul Orndorff (sub. for Hercules) (w/ Bobby Heenan & Andre the Giant) in a non-title match
Another 6 man in Omaha and Paul vanishes until early June.

I'm going with lost in the shuffle and hurt more so than any kind of back up plan.

I think a part of the charm for WrestleMania III, as a hardcore fan and maybe even a casual fan is that Orndorff and Kamala the #2 and #3 challengers for Hogan aren't there so it really kind of underlines that Andre-Hogan is THE important life or death match and you're not half thinking "Well. Maybe once Hogan's done this, he can wrestle Kamala." Not everyone has to be on every major card even if it's a major star!

The only actual changes I'd ever make to that card are making the sixman into just a straight tag title match (all belts gotta be defended, dude), Tito probably messing with Danny Davis for a few minutes, and probably the turning the Bees/Sheik and Volkoff match into a sixman. That's basically it.

I'm probably alone in loving Haynes/Herc.

It's the Eddie Guerrero Vs Test of WrestleMania III!

Remember there's an ulterior motive for the six man. Dynamite suffered that back injury in December. The more you keep Dynamite out of the ring at that point the better.

IIRC Kid takes the heat segment anyway.

The Bulldogs/Harts had been working on and off for 2 years by that point. The real appeal to the match is that Evil Ref Danny Davis was going to have to face the 3 men he screwed and those twats the Harts are going to try and save his ass.

Keep that rewind button pressed and you'll find wrestling bears, human orchids, celebrities involved in main events, and the origins of this great, great sport alongside the freaks at the county fair.

Found a new contender for worst WWF house show lineup of all time on KM

Stratford, CT - March 6, 1985
Salvatore Bellomo defeated Doc Butler
Jose Luis Rivera defeated Barry O
SD Jones defeated Ricky Sexton
Cobra defeated Jim Neidhart by DQ
Paul Roma/Mario Mancini defeated Gino Carabello/Pete Pompeii

This is thirty minutes from WWE Headquarters too. You'd think they'd be able to scrounge up better talent. Especially since looking at HistoryofWWE, it looks like the A crew had a couple nights off but Vince probably figured that he didn't want to risk any of the major WrestleMania talent getting hurt three weeks before the show in some high school gym.

Other two cards that night for Brody's sake
WWF @ Elizabeth, NJ - Dunn Sports Arena - March 6, 1985
George Wells defeated Johnny V
Bret Hart fought Matt Borne to a draw
WWF IC Champion Greg Valentine defeated Tito Santana in a lumberjack match
The Junkyard Dog defeated Paul Orndorff via disqualification
Mr. Wrestling II defeated Moondog Spot
Brutus Beefcake defeated Ivan Putski

WWF @ White Plains, NY - Westchester County Civic Center - March 6, 1985
Rick McGraw fought Rene Goulet to a draw
Ricky Steamboat defeated Terry Gibbs
Tony Atlas defeated Bob Orton Jr. via disqualification
Buddy Rose defeated Tony Garea
WWF Tag Team Champions Barry Windham & Mike Rotundo defeated the Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff

I'd be curious to see if that stuff was even billed as a WWF show or something like "LIVE WRESTLING FEATURING WWF SUPERSTARS"?

Also I'm wondering if The Cobra was the NJPW junior heavyweight star. That's the only reason I can think of why the most famous person on the show (probably even that early in his run) wasn't able to get a clean win over what appeared to be some rando. He was on excursion in the US during this time period. Alas, this card is not listed on Cagematch.

Weird thing I just noticed… When Savage enters the ring at WrestleMania 5, he’s wearing his version of the world title belt with the velcro. When Hogan wins, the belt he celebrates with has buttons. Kayfabe is dead!
