It's very possible that I'll be seeing Smashing Pumpkins in Jersey on Thursday. The MSG show is the night before but my friend got great seats that I'm not willing to drop $400 on. The NJ tickets are way more afforable but it depends if I have a job interview that day.

We have Diamond Rio and Loverboy playing free shows at a local festival this fall. Also, George Thoroughgood was announced as coming, today.

Totally going to this. They announced special guests Courtney Love, Peter Hook, Davey Havok (AFI singer), Chino Moreno, Mark McGrath (wtf?), and members of the Killers.

Well, that was quite the show. They played all the hits but left out Disarm for some reason. They closed with a song from Disney's Dumbo.

The arena was pretty full. I don't have any hard numbers to reference obviously but it was a near sell-out. Pumpkins have a third touring guitarist and a female keyboard player which will make Kreese happy.

There were a lot of covers. Stairway to Heaven, Love Will Tears Us Apart, etc.

Mark McGrath joined them onstage and sang Sugar Ray's Fly which alienated half the audience while the other half had fun with it. Even Billy joined him on vocals which pissed my friend (diehard Pumpkins fan) off. They then did a cover of Breaking the Law with Mark on vocals.

Courtney Love was completley hammered and looked and sounded terrible. They did Celebrity Skin and Malibu, both were awful. She then helped sing the chorus for Bullet with Butterfly Wings and was completley drowned out.

Chino joined them onstage for Bodies and Snail, both of which they hardly perform live.

For my first Pumpkins show, I had a lot of fun but a lot of my friends weren't very impressed with all the special guests and prefered other times they had seen them.

I was there too. 10th row, $32.25! I enjoyed it a lot, though I would have preferred the setlist from the other dates on the tour. I'm surprised at the lack of "Disarm" as that has been the opener on the other shows. Not a single song from Adore, which is a major letdown. I think the show may have been delayed since the set times listed the start as 8:15 but it started after 8:30, so maybe they cut something. The third guitarist is the guy who replaced Iha on all their tours from 2007 until this one. The bassist is Peter Hook's son, which explains why Peter was there. Keyboard girl is a snack.

I wasn't really into the special guests. I'm not a big Deftones fan, though I do like some of their songs. But I just wasn't into hearing another singer sing Pumpkins songs while Billy was on stage. I don't care for AFI at all. I was expecting "Celebrity Skin" and was totally stoked for it, but I was very disappointed. Courtney has no stage presence anymore. The Killers guys were fine since they didn't sing. I like Peter Hook a lot and I'm glad I got to see him since the one time I saw New Order was after he left, but again, this is a Pumpkins show. I stood there with my mouth agape as I watched Mark McGrath sing "Fly." I never wanted that.

I loved the "Stairway to Heaven" cover. I'm glad I got to hear "Today" since they didn't play it the first time I saw them. I left during "Solara" because I thought that was the last song, but I heard the Dumbo song from the parking lot. Weird-ass show, totally worth it.

My friend was mad because he bought our tickets during the pre-sale and wound up spending over $300 for the 8th row while the rest of our friends bought their tickets much later and were able to upgrade to the first few rows for almost nothing. We had friends who paid $20 for lawn seats and upgraded to row 11 for an additional $20.

Yeah, I never buy early for the PNC because there will always be a way to get in cheaper. Either there’s going to be a price reduction or a special promotion or a Groupon or a discount code or free lawn tickets or an upgrade or sometimes all of the above. I got free tickets to the Bush/STP show last Saturday then upgraded for $20, so they sent me a $20 off code for going to that show which I used for the Pumpkins, and now I have another $20 off code for going to the Pumpkins show which I will probably use to see Judas Priest.

I bought a last minute ticket to see Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson tonight. I finally get to see Thundekiss live!

Looking at the setlists, looks like Zombie isn't playing anything past the Sinister Urge which is for the better. I mean, who the hell wants to hear shit from "Educated Horses"?

Frank Mullen is doing one more tour with Suffocation before officially calling it a career. They're coming around Boston on October 22nd, and it'll be my girlfriend's first and last time seeing Suffo as they were meant to be seen.

I went to Boston for a few days earlier this week to see Pearl Jam at Fenway Park. They've been doing a small stadium tour only hitting Boston, Chicago, Seattle, and Montana. This was my first time seeing them and they were amazing. The highlight was "Nothingman". I would definatley see them again in a more intimate venue.

They apparently cut "Do the Evolution" for time which was dissapointing but they performed so much other stuff that it didn't even matter.

I took the long and boring drive to Holmdel last night to see Ozzy for the probable final time. I’ve only seen him solo once before in 2010, but Zakk Wylde wasn’t in the band at the time so I didn’t really get the full Ozzy experience. Anyway Ozzy was...not very good but I didn’t really expect him to be. His voice has not been great any of the times I’ve seen him and now he’s had to tune down yet another half-step in order to sing the songs, and he was still off-key for a lot of them. Also he wears a tight shirt which accentuates his gut and moobs, which is unnecessary since he doesn’t look fat in most pictures. He can hide it if he tries, that’s all I’m saying. The whole set list consisted of songs he played the last time I saw him - Bark at the Moon, Mr. Crowley, I Don’t Know, Faeries Wear Boots, Suicide Solution, No More Tears, Road to Nowhere, War Pigs, then a long instrumental jam where they played excerpts from songs that I would have liked to hear in full like Miracle Man and Perry Mason, then Ozzy came back and they did I Don’t Want To Change the World, Shot in the Dark and closed the main set with Crazy Train. He came back with an encore of Mama, I’m Coming Home but he kinda spaced out on the “you made me cry, you told me lies” lyrics and then Zakk whispered something in his ear and he resumed singing but did so unconvincingly, like he was reading the lyrics off the TelePrompTer and wasn’t sure of the vocal melody. But he picked it up again and finished the song without issue. However, Ozzy must have been unsatisfied with his performance because he then played the whole song again, not missing any lines this time. I think he may have dementia. He closed with Paranoid and the evening was mercifully over. I was pretty close to the stage, about 22nd row or so, and I paid $45. Others in the section paid a lot more and wow did they get screwed, but the show met my expectations. I enjoyed watching Zakk shred all night. The singing wasn’t great but I had fun.

My friend got to open for a Queen Tribute band. The frontman is a member of another band in the region that has a HUGE following and the two have become good pals.

I'm not going to oversell by saying the guy is Freddy Mercury reincarnated, but when he did "Under Pressure" (with my friend returning to the stage for the Bowie parts) I could have closed my eyes and been transported to another time. It was moving to hear THAT song live by talented musicians, and also knowing someone I care about was up there rocking it with all of his heart for his Bowie love. I've never felt such emotion from a COVER in my life.

The entire set was phenomenal. Talking to the frontman after the show, he couldn't' wait to go home and shave off his mustache because he only grows it out for this particular act. I didn't realize the last time he did this ensemble was November 2017 and he only busts it out once a year. And that the other members of the band are all in other bands with huge followings in the area. Like guys that can live JUST off their gigs and own homes in suburbia.

The drummer, I've never heard his main band, but he was stealing the show. His face told a story with every song as he drummed. He wasn't stoic or phoning it in. EVERY beat meant something for him.

Just loved the whole night.

Ozzy just added another leg to this tour and he's coming to the Garden next year with Megadeth opening. I've already seen Black Sabbath so I think that's enough OzMan for a lifetime though I'm mildly interested in checking out Zakk Wylde.

All you need to know about Zakk Wylde is that I saw him get beamed off the face with a beer bottle mid-shred and he didn't stop playing.

So my last post in this thread was about a Queen tribute band and we just found out the Adam Lambert fronted version of Queen is coming here.

Tickets for nosebleeds are $115. I'm not sure it's in the works for me. I'm encouraging Mrs. SFH to find someone to go but her BFF is skeptical on the project as well. Neither me or BFF have anything against Adam. BFF is a purist and I have a horrible track record with attending concerts of great bands in their later years. It's almost always more sad than entertaining.

Mrs. SFH has a huge thing for Brian May, though and she keeps emphasizing, "YEAH BUT BRIAN MAY!" and I'm like, "no Freddie no care....and if my prior experiences are any indication, it'll be a waste of $230 if we both go."

My most recent hire at work keeps posting about the same concert but I think it might be too soon to try and pair them two off as friends.

Anyone seen this ensemble live? Not on youtube or television, but actually in person? I'd imagine if they are making money on this it's gotta be good to someone, right? They're playing the Smoothie King center not some half ass casino or theater.

But so did the ticket of Cheap Trick, Def Leppard, and Poison and that was rough for about 2/3 of the show.

Yeah, the new Queen is coming here too next year. They stopped here for a show two years ago at the Barclays center which Wikipedia tells me was a sell out. I guess they want to capitalize on the movie so I expect another sell out (or near it).

I saw them last summer in Newark. I paid almost $70 for a nosebleed seat, and I was a bit hesitant about paying Freddie prices for an American Idol, but Queen was the first band I ever liked and this is the closest facsimile of them in existence. It was a very good show. Of course Adam doesn't have Freddie's stage presence (nobody does) but he does have a great voice and he's versatile enough to pull off Brian May's straightforward hard rock numbers and Freddie's foppish pop tunes (when Paul Rodgers sang with them he could not do the latter, leaving them unable to perform several of their greatest hits). Here's the setlist. The highlight for me was Brian's solo performance of "Love of My Life" because (if I can be so maudlin) this was a few months after my dad died and it got me thinking about the last Valentine's Day card he made for my mom just days before his death which read "to the love of my life" and then they played a clip of Freddie singing it on the big screen and yeah I teared up a bit. They did not do my favorite Queen song "The Show Must Go On" but they did do my second favorite "Who Wants To Live Forever" and a bunch of other songs I have enjoyed since childhood, so they hit a lot of emotional home runs. SFH, I can't say whether or not you would consider this show to be worth the high ticket prices you will have to pay but it definitely was not "sad." It's an excellent revue of Queen's biggest hits with the authenticity of two original members. Is it worth $230? IDK

I hate "I'm In Love With My Car" so much that, post-Freddie, it'd be a dealbreaker, and Queen was also the first band I ever liked. But genuinely for that price I'd personally pass. It just wouldn't feel quite right, and even if it was a great show, Queen without Freddie just isn't Queen.

Concerts thread

I saw Queen with Paul Rogers at the Worcester Centrum and it rocked IIRC.

I think I'm done spending $50+ on classic rock concerts. I am spending $55 to see Colin Blunstone from the Zombies in a 150 seat performance arts center but idea of seeing geezers in the enormo dome doesn't have much appeal anymore. Incidentally, I think it was that KISS concert I saw two years ago mentioned in the KISS thread that I think turned me against my notion that I have to see these legacy bands.

If it's in a small venue or if I get discount tickets or they're doing something out of the box, sure. But I'm not gonna fall for spending more than $50 to see the classic rock legends of yesteryear.

Feel free to quote this post when I write about seeing the Rolling Stones at Gillette.

I thought I was done paying top dollar for legacy bands too but then I got roped into paying $175 to see Iron Maiden next summer. Granted we'll be in the pit area and not in the seats but still....

I looked at the Manson/Zombie tour dates and there's no NYC-area show so keep waiting, Epic.

Last June Geoff Tate, former singer of Queensryche, came to Stroudsburg performing the classic album Operation: Mindcrime as well as other 'ryche classics. I didn't go because at the time I was unemployed and trying to avoid extraneous purchases, but I regretted missing it, just as I regretted missing when Queensryche came to Reading, PA in 2005, a mere 30 minutes from my college, also performing Mindcrime in full, and I didn't go to that either. Well he's coming back to Stroudsburg in June and I think I'm going.

Zombie sure does hate coming around the areas that produced him, it seems.

Benighted are embarking on their first US tour ever in support of Aborted. I'm not the biggest Aborted fan after Necrotic Manifesto, but holy shit will I lose my mind if Benighted play "Carnivore Sublime."

Alice in Chains' lat couple of albums have been really mediocre after Black Gives Way To Blue. I enjoyed Korn's last couple of albums, and wouldn't mind seeing them once.

Smashing Pumpkins are back on the road this summer with Noel Gallagher's new band. My friend bought tickets for $175 a pop and I declined since it's looking like another greatest hits show and I'm not paying that much for that.

I would go to that show but they aren't playing in Holmdel, which makes sense. The Pumpkins wouldn't draw in the same market a year later.

Alice Cooper is playing in Bethel which is the nearest venue to me but it's with fucking Halestorm. Are they even big enough to be a co-headliner? It's gonna be a weak summer for concerts.
