Obviously what's actually going to happen is we will go back to school in the fall and we'll have our second (third?) huge infection boom.

Do you think kids will actually be able to go back to school in the Fall?

Honestly, I hate to be one of those guys but in this instance, I think Sweden (and I think some of the other European countries) have right idea. Open up pre-school and elementary schools, MAYBE middle schools but have high schools and colleges learn remotely until we get a vaccine.

I don't know if this will be a trend that will continue or if it will happen and then be pulled back on....but I work in Adult Ed (ESL/GED students) and my school here in MN is already starting GED testing again in about a week. They are doing specific protocols for sure, but this might be a litmus test to see if other classes maybe can open in the fall at least in my school here. Our classes are normally around 10-15 adult students, so it might be doable, but I don't know if it's smart.

That said, I'm losing my mind it feels like working remotely from home and doing constant Google Meet classes and such, but I'm still glad I'm working. It just feels like this is such a difficult way to try to teach and learn equally.

My classes after they went online were (mostly) absolute jokes btw. I completely stopped watching the lectures for 3 of my 4 classes after a week and a half and looked up the answers/discussed with other students on Discord for tests and still made all A's like normal.

Admittedly, I had lengthy projects in all but one of my classes, which took real work. If not for those, I could have completely given up on this semester and still been fine.

I'm conflicted on whether or not I'd want do all online classes again.

I think we'll have a mix of schools going back by this fall. I know in Ohio there has been talk about doing online 3 times a week and in person 2 times a week (everyone on Friday is online) so that you can have half the number of students in actual classes.

Longer term, I think the end date is approaching on how long people will be willing to distance. Just in the past month the number of people who are in favor of the statewide shutdowns has fallen from 80 to 71%. By this fall my guess is it will be closer to 50. By next Spring I think you'll have over half the country who will want it over even if it means having 1 million dead per year until there is a vaccine. I don't think most people are going to be willing to wait longer than a year for a vaccine. So hopefully one is developed within the next year.

Company near me is hoping to have an emergency release of their vaccine in the Fall, just got FDA approval for Stage 2 of their clinical trials too. They, along with a partner company in Sweeden, are going to be producing 1 Billion vaccines per year.

Word that the virus may've hit the US as early as January

https://www.wcvb.com/article/national-coronavirus-updates-may-12/32443062

"The onset of five COVID-19 cases in five separate counties in Ohio happened as early as January, state Health Director Dr. Amy Acton has said, citing results of antibody testing.

That meshes with a growing body of research suggesting the virus was spreading in the United States and elsewhere at least weeks, if not months, before official case counts started picking up in February and March."

People really need to congregate and watch the Masked Singer together as a community. That’s how you defeat the virus. Not a mask. Not sanitizer. Just the love of giant costumed C list celebrities.

Cuomo announced that beaches will be open Memorial Day weekend but only at 50% capacity. Still seems risky but hey, what do I know?

Really curious to see what next weekend looks like. Maine has lowest COVID-19 rate in New England and some of the lowest in the entire country but thought of people coming up from Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York...eeee.

Hotels don't officially open until June 1st so maybe that'll curb yahoos from coming up and getting my parents sick.

It's been really nice out the last few days and of course, I saw people without masks hanging out in large groups outside. If next weekend has similar weather, you can guarantee that people are just going to do whatever they want and quarantine will unofficially be over.

https://www.newsweek.com/texas-reports-highest-single-day-rise-coronavirus-cases-state-continues-push-ahead-reopening-1504659

"Two weeks after Texas Governor Greg Abbott began reopening the economy, the southern state on Saturday reported 1,801 new confirmed coronavirus infections marking its single-highest rise in cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

Of the new cases, 734 are from Potter and Randall counties. "These counties' new cases are largely from targeted testing of employees at meat plants in the area. More test results from plants are expected," tweeted the Texas Department of Health.

As of May 17, Texas has a total of 45,198 COVID-19 cases, with 1,272 deaths and 25,454 recoveries. Before the weekend, Texas had never reported over 1,500 cases in one day. The state has been averaging roughly 1,220 cases per day over the past week..."

The "case number" data can be misleading because an uptick in that could simply mean more testing is being done. Deaths is probably the best measuring stick but since we don't know about them days or sometimes weeks after the case, hospitalizations are probably the next best thing. A lot of states aren't really reporting hospitalizations in consistent ways, though, so it makes it tough to use that, too. The "single highest rise" has more meaning if we know how much they were testing prior to the reopening and if these new positive tests are resulting in more hospitalizations or if that data is not known. So much of our actions were predicated on keeping hospitals from being overwhelmed but if we don't have that data in states that are reopening it is hard for us to gauge how effective/ineffective the reopening has been.

This guy pretty much blew the door open on Trump's failed policy, but it's both funny and sad that the reason it's getting all this attention now is because Trump tweeted about it.

So this leads to two questions:

1. Does he have corona?
2. If he doesn't why the hell is he taking this?

I'm assuming the answer to number 2 is because he's an idiot.

He could likely also be lying and not taking it while his stupid supporters will take it cause they will do anything he says.
