Gonna assume it was the Main Event before Uncensored '96 but I'll go to Cawthon's site to check.

EDIT: Yes it was and JL won! wtf

Did he specifically name Punk? I feel like I don’t buy bringing in Punk in 2001 as anything more than revisionist history as I don’t really remember a punk blowing up until maybe 2003-04 at the earliest. Styles and Daniels were working WCW, so I get that. Punk seems fabricated at that moment in time to me.
Punk started to gain a rep (on the indies at least) in 2002 with the Chris Hero IWA-MS matches and to a lesser extent his series with Colt Cabana also in various midwest indies. I think him being in the ring with Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio and not looking that out of place in 02 helped him as well, but in May 2001 he was a no name. I was still getting Apter mags at that point and Punk wasn't that hyped compared to other indie guys.

I can't see the new WCW ever working with some of the older names listed still being there. Hall didn't get clean until over a decade later and the Luger/Liz stuff happening while Luger was in a major wrestling company would've been a disaster for WCW. Hogan wasn't going to play ball with those younger guys. Nash I could actually see eventually going along with the younger guys like he did in TNA. Flair, Sting, and DDP are definitely guys I would of kept around though.

From other interviews, Bischoff seemed more self reflective and self aware at that time than he ever had before so maybe there was a glimmer of hope that it could've turned out fine. But, too many of the guys that really damaged WCW were still going to be around.

I feel like Hogan's lawsuit against WCW wasn't resolved until years after they went out of business so I have no idea if he was really realistically part of their plans.

I don't think suing the Turner people for Russo's actions would effect working for Eric's new thing.

---
I think Punk was mentioned in passing as they covered the ROH all stars that arose in the early 2000s and IIRC Eric likes Punk's WWE stuff.

--

The TV deal would of course be the end game in how this new WCW would go. Had they somehow found an FS1 or whatever to host it, that could drastically lower how much the team of money guys were willing to drop. IIRC the 60 million dollars was valid only with Turner's TV being the vehicle. AND as we recently talked about, the WWF gave Turner a 20 million dollar ad buy as part of the deal, so that would be 33 percent of the funds gone.

A lower end Super Indy type of thing on FS1 or whatever might have been interesting as a mix of TNA, ECW (XPW), XWF and ROH instead of all those brands and talents spreading out. Maybe Hogan agrees to a few dates to help Jimmy Hart and Eric like he did in the XWF.
Instead of so many guys being sucked into the WWF developmental and washing out, we'd see a slew of semi established guys start to rebuild the mid card while the house shows are carried by nostalgia acts (Duggan, LOD, Nasties, Hennig ala the XWF) and TV is a blend.
Hall showed up in early TNA, so maybe he works some early main events to help get some guys over. Shamrock can work part-time to help promote his MMA stuff. Lawler had a falling out with Vince in 2001 (right?) so maybe he can headline some Memphis area shows with the Midnight Express, Rock and Roll Express and Fabulous Ones giving the nostalgia rub to the promotion.
Whatever ECW guys fail to go to Vince can help support the Philly and Florida shows maybe with a Kevin Sullivan, Dusty and Abby sprinkled in to help draw as the new guys get highlighted . ETC ETC.

The Fuck? Zero recall of this. On Nitro nonetheless.

I listened to a bit more of Eric's pod. He wanted WCW to go dark until the fall, but TBS and the money guys had issues with such a plan.
The Big Bang PPV was to be done cold with no TV build. Eric knew a PPV kickoff would not reach nearly as many people but thought the buzz of what the new product would be could spark interest.

I only about it because I was such a die hard Marty fan before he became a problematic online presence. I was always hoping he'd get his head together and redeem himself. Almost definitely not going to happen!

Weirdly, I feel like this WCW run might have been the point of no return for him. He comes back with a new look to somewhere where's completely out of HBK's shadow and gets in maybe the best shape of his career but gets told "creative has nothing for you." Sad!

I remember it. Pretty crisp in the ring and used the RockerDropper (lame arm-twist with leg over the back of the neck sitout face plant) as his finish. I kept thinking that a better finish and some evolution to his character would make him a good Us Title champ or a great hand in a faction.
