Only thing I remember from Erik Watts’ ‘99 WCW run was him being “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan’s sidekick in a weird Jimmy Hart booked era Saturday Night exclusive four way feud between them, The Armstrong Brothers, Steven Regal & Dave Taylor and Hugh Morrus & Brian Knobbs.

It’s like head of creative for WCW at the time was like “alright Jimmy, you can book your own angles but you have to pick the names of all of the guys involved out of a hat.”

I thought Erik Watts and Jeff Jarrett became IRL friends during Watts’ ‘99 run but it looks like Watts’ last match was only 3-4 weeks after Double J returned to WCW.

Maybe it was just a “Widely unliked second generation wrestlers got to stick together.” thing.

Was that the "break the curse" run for Steve and Scott Armstrong? Because I remember that being a thing way more vividly than I probably should.

Ex WWF guys in WCW I didn’t know predated Hogan.

Darsow was one year older than I am now in this clip.

(@Laz: same hairline though)
And 1994 WCW booked him better than late 1991 WWF did.

To be fair the WWF wouldn't have gotten anything out of Jimmy Golden either but Bunkhouse worked wonderful in WCW.

Rereading Controversy Creates Cash as a bathroom book (a literal WCW Bullshit?). First time really reading it in a while. It's kind of amazing how much he glosses over or doesn't talk about it all. He doesn't mention Goldberg's streak ending or The Fingerpoke of Doom at all afaik. Considering how much combative and defensive he gets when his podcast covers '98-'99 now, I get why he doesn't want to dwell on that period. I just wish I got some of thought process on the whys and hows of that angle even if they undoubtedly would've been stupid.

Also he doesn't say anything incendiary enough to justify the title! What a crock! I want the $4 I spent on this at a used book store 10-15 years ago back.

Also @BUTT and that creep parasite Dave Meltzer will probably be pleased to know that Bischoff said that Kevin Nash probably came up with the idea for the Bischoff-Ric Flair angle leading to Starrcade '98, which would imply he WAS in creative when he ended Goldberg's streak.

Not saying anything controversial to sell a book about controversey is totally the controversial part. Some Alanis-esque ironic irony shit.

It makes sense that one of the power players called their chips (Nash wins...Hogan ends up w/ title) than to try and blame/credit Sullivan/Dusty/Terry Taylor etc with just booking Goldberg to lose.

Was Bigelow involved in that match in anyway? If my brain doesn't deceive me, his whole deal leading to Starrcade was laying out people on his way to challenging Goldy. I've probably watched Starrcade 98 once. I'm not even sure I made it that far when reviewing all the PPVs for CXF.

If they did something like have Bigelow lay Goldberg out first (ala Macho Man @ Rumble 90) you give Goldberg a little extra of an out, on top of the fuck finish.

I actually wish he was better about the random shit on b/c-shows. Pick someone to make the new Lizmark Jr. and get awesome matches with huge names that have literally no point.

Briefly. He ran out to jump Goldberg after the ref bump, and Goldberg taking him out is what allowed Hall to hit him with the taser.

There were definitely matches with more obscure names and crappier storylines but for no particularly good reason, Bam Bam Bigelow Vs Wrath at Souled Out '99 stands out to me as one of the "Huh. Why did that happen again?" matches in WCW PPV history.

I'm always surprised when I remember Wrath even made it to 1999. I assumed he just vaporized between the time period where Nash ended his winning streak and Kronik debuted.

Edit- Checking Bryan Clarke's Cagematch and first even as the New Gen connoisseur, I'm surprised he's listed as Adam Bomb not Wrath. Second, Wrath made it to April '99! Although after Souled Out '99, he's mostly a C/D show and hour one of Nitro guy.

I think he just had misfortune of coming up a few years after the heyday of managers. If you put a Bobby Heenan or Paul E. Dangerously with him, I think he's an IC Title/US Title level guy maybe.

Vince gave up on Clarke pretty quickly. After the babyface turn he's putting over the pushed heels (Shawn, Mabel) pretty quickly in 95.

Slam Wrestling article on the tragic life of The Renegade from earlier this year is a fantastic read.

Dude sucked in '95 but he really got the rawest of deals. Killer Kowalski adamantly refused to admit he trained him!

Weird thing is he actually became a passable wrestler but by the time that happened, he was absolutely lost in the shuffle and had no chance of regaining his spot. Idk if there was a worse environment for a young wrestler to come up than '90s WCW. Besides DDP, Idk anyone who turned out well. Even the successful wrestlers seemed to have major character flaws (Goldberg constantly nearly accidentally killing other wrestlers and/or himself through his brutishness)
