I think you'll have a much better time if you play the first one first. You can probably find it used real cheap. They're both great games.

I'm hoping for the next game they bring back more items like guns and armor and whatever else. I want it to be like Dragon Age Origins because after I kill some big time baddie I want to loot his corpse.

Getting a shitload of stuff from enemies and having to sort through it was something I hated about the first game.

Just bumping this to say that I'm finally finishing up my Insanity run through. Moving slowed me down for a bit. Started out a pain in the ass since you don't have all your upgrades, but by the time you get to the first collector's ship, you should have a pretty good idea what to have and it's really not that bad. My soldier just finished Grunt's loyalty quest with Zaeed and took out the big fight using just my collector rifle. If you're a Soldier class, or really anything that doesn't have tech armor, I recommend using one of your defense boosts (either Grunt or Legion) as your special ability. Reave works OK for offense, but once you start running into bad guys that come at you (like Geth hunters and krogan mercs) you'll need the reserve once their shotguns start tearing you apart. Oh yeah, if you're a Soldier, max out Adrenaline Boost. Works wonders when you're sniping, plus if you use the option that halves your damage taken, you can actually fire off some rounds without getting blasted. Oh yeah, and abuse the hack glitch. That helps a lot.

It was an utter, utter shock importing a soldier from ME1 to ME2. What was once a tank in ME1, was much MUCH weaker than a sentinel.

Cover is your only save!

Basically yeah, cover's all you got. On Insanity your shield is gone in like 5 or 6 hits, and with guys firing rifles at you the hits add up in a hurry. Plus, they could have one of your teammates standing 5 feet away from them looking the other way and they'll still fire at you, along with every other entity not wearing your colors. Irritating, but I'm going to fanwank it by saying that they know they have to team up on Shepard because if they don't he will devour them soul first.

Just got this last week, tore through it during the weekend and finished with my Shepard from ME1

That last mission, holy shit, I was pure panic hoping none of my favorites would die. What this game does right is give you characters that you care about and want to see make it though, more or less. Mordin bought it off-screen and saw his body, not that fussed as i fell out with him over the Genophage. However it's been 2 days and i'm STILL upset over Thane copping a bullet in the head, all because we couldn't get a fucking blast door closed in time. I know there's an achievement if you get the whole team through, but I think there's more of an emotional punch if you lose some team mates. I thought Garrus had took one in the stomach and then later i thought Grunt had been crushed under a support beam, you have no idea how relieved I was when they were both ok

I would have been PISSED if Garrus and Tali didn't make it through my run.

I would have been pissed off no matter what happened, the only characters i'm not super keen on were Jacob, Mordin and Samara and even then I like them well enough.

Its a pity you can't have a proper conversation with Zaaed, his plan to get an advantage in the fuel refinery was brilliant, plus I LOVED how he took out Vido. i think he's my favorite of the new characters after Thane.

Let me know how it is when you get done. For some reason I can't get an IP address assigned to my XBox while I'm visiting relatives so I don't have access to Live.

I just started playing ME2 yesterday, and I am so far very, very happy with it. I love punching out that cunt of a reporter again. I'm also quite glad I changed "Trask" Shepard from a soldier to an infiltrator. The cloaking ability is indeed a lifesaver. Also, the sniper rifle rocks. I love teaming with Garrus, and having both of us destroy Krogan with our rifles.

I'm still pissed that I gave up the best sniper rifle for shotguns. What a fucking waste.

Seconded. I'm going through it now as an Infiltrator and I'm getting that Widowmaker. I figure combining that with the Locust (weapon from the Kasumi missione) and the basic pistol will be a decent enough loadout.

One of my favorite combos as an Infiltrator isn't even a combo. It is use the cloak, and then haul ass to a good cover spot.
I
I just picked up Grunt, and he's in the party. I'm a bit upset we don't get a, "'Shepard.' 'Wrex.'" exchange. I guess that is saved for Wrex...poor guy.

I just did a random side quest where it was a research facility where the people were, once again, corrupted by a Reaper Indoctrination device. The data logs were very funny..talking about how they planned to sell this thing off, and then how cool it was, and then how they were not going to sell it off. The device winds up spawning countless waves of Husks. I finally decided to cloak myself, and then blow up the thing.

Man, do I hate husks in this game. They are just so freaking annoying with their zombie behavior and their stupid faces...and how they come around from the other side and wind up beating on me from behind while I fend off the others....Garrus and Tali are also nowhere to be found...

Anyways....I have to finish up soon and then start my new game where I go pure renegade and make myself a disfigured freak.

The mine? It's not endless, it just seems like it. Stay as a group and slowly work your way to the high point overlooking the entrance to the device chamber, then slowly retreat backwards until the wave is finished off. I recommend something reapid firing for your super weapon, since you'll probably end it. I'm using my arc projector to see how it does since it's supposed to be an anti-personnel weapon.

I finished 2 today. It was a pretty little romp towards the end. I was happy to be able to keep everyone alive. Jacob was actually shot in the stomach, but was able to make it. I breathed a sigh of relief at that point. I'm starting a new game with a female character who will be the biggest bitch in the galaxy.

I'm doing the N7 missions before I go for the suicide mission. I'm a Sentinel and picked a sniper rifle specialization later on, so I'm pretty well rounded. I'm using a female Shepard I imported from 1 (which was vanguard). Jennifer Hale >>>> that dude who does male Shep.

I was like a 90% Paragon last time, but now I, while I have my Paragon meter filled, have gone renegade at times. Like punching that reporter. And punching that guy in Thane's loyalty mission. And telling the Council, pretty much word for word, to shove it up their asses. UNgrateful fucks.

Mostly enjoying the game, but oh god, the probes. It's far worse than any running back and forth in one spot level grinding in a JRPG. I want the buggy back rather than have to go through this again in ME3.

Yeah, if you let 'em gang up on you you are essentially dead. I'm not having much problems with them, because if they break my shield, they pay dearly for it (I think it's a sentinel skill; they break the shield, they take damage and get knocked back).

I found the most effective way of dealing with individual husks that get too close is two melees and a shot. This also got me the brawler achievement in the process. :p

I assume that means you lost Wrex in ME1. Don't worry, there's no "Shepard"/"Wrex" even when you meet up with him...which, yeah, is kind of disappointing.

One of the sidequests nets you a facial reconstruction machine on board the Normandy, so if you want a Renegade female and still want her to be hot, you can still do so. It's awesome that it's an option.

On my second playthrough, I made sure to buy the med bay upgrade that keeps my new female vanguard hot.

While I agree that Jennifer Hale is awesome, Mark Meer really brought it during the second game. I'm not sure what it is that causes this....maybe it's the catchphrases after doing something cool, but male Shepard is much better this time around. His voice has that second layer to it. It's as if the attitude is, "I've already been dead once, I'm pissed, and I'm here to enjoy myself."

Here is a funny side not about the first game....Jenkins, the guy who wound up being just a glorified red shirt, his full name is Richard LEROY Jenkins. Fitting for his demise.

Fair enough. I remember when I rented Mass Effect I played through a few hours of the game, and felt male Shep was just so bad that him plus the horrible framerate turned me off of the game.

However, after I learned that it runs much better after installing to the hard drive, I picked up ME1 for 8 bucks and made Michelle Shepard and liked the game about 100x better.

I guess worst case scenario is that I could get around to making Mal Shepard again on ME2, and if I hate 'im I can just kill the save.

I don't remember him at all. Care to explain? Or better yet, a vid clip? ;)
