It's too bad they didn't give the 3DS virtual console the Super Gameboy abilities, since I recall Donkey Kong looking pretty cool on Super Gameboy.
...although it's the only game I remember being optimized for it, so maybe it wasn't worth it. Actually I wish they had added in the gameboy color abilities, where you can pick one of like 16 color palettes to use with any game. Maybe we'll get that in a future update someday.

I was thinking the same thing, but looking at some youtube footage reminded me that most of the colour work in that game was devoted to the title screen and world maps. The game play areas don't seem to suffer much from the colour loss.

The Game Boy and Game Boy Color re-releases on the Nintendo 3DS give the player the option to play with the classic "Game Boy" and "Game Boy Color" skin themes which shrinks the Game Boy screen to its original aspect ratio if the player holds the "Start" or "Select" button when launching a Game Boy or Game Boy Color game to make the games less pixelated and more smoother looking. Original Game Boy games such as Super Mario Land can allow the player to switch between the original "black and white" or "black and dark green" color palettes by holding the "L" and "R" shoulder buttons and pressing the "X" button at any time during gameplay.

You'd think they'd advertise that. The part about the aspect ratio I don't get since the games play in 4:3 on the 3DS by default anyway.

The smoother looking thing - the first thing I noticed playing SML was that it looked smoothed over, but in an unnatural way. I can't really explain it and I chalked it up to the screen being a different material than a standard GB screen, but sometimes I'd see a brief after image of a coin after collecting it... or something. I just remember thinking underground pipe bonus areas looking odd.

I don't have a 3DS, but I post at Nintendorks and they brought it up. It's apparently in the virtual manual if you look for it, but why the fuck would you look for it if you didn't know about it? It's so cool they emulate the "pea green" Game Boy color (even though I never saw it as "pea green" myself on my ol' brick.

I just did it myself - when they say original aspect ratio, they mean REALLY original aspect ratio - you get a picture of the GB/GBC on the screen with the game inside that. If you hold L+R during a regular Game Boy game (it didn't work when I just tried on Link's Awakening, but that was probably because I was in original ratio mode) it does prompt you to press Y to swap colours between greyscale and greenscale. It works on a regular GB game though - it does look right to make Mario Land green, I'll admit.

Now if you could just open DK with a GBC somehow...

I wish DK '94 included the option for Super Game Boy enhancements. I'm not used to seeing that game in monochrome. And I kinda wish they let you play original Link's Awakening. The DX cart still worked on regular Game Boy, so it's in the ROM image.

Just got a confirmation e-mail from club Nintendo that my order is being processed. It doesn't say WHAT order, but since I haven't ordered anything from them I'll guess it's my Ocarina soundtrack. Huzzah.

I forgot today was New Release Thursday in the VC world. Anything? That's kind of a rhetorical question since I'll just go look myself.

I've discovered street pass Mecca, and it's name is Gameworks. Got a ton of hits in there in a short amount of time. I'll probably go back looking for more, as I'm just five or six puzzle pieces away from having everything you can get from street pass and not needing to worry about it anymore.

Final Fantasy III/VI also came out on the Wii VC today, which I figured would be happening soon enough once CT was released.

I found a copy of Metroid Prime Trilogy today, the first time I've seen it at a store in a long time. Even though I already I have it, I bought it since people seem to be buying it for $90+ on eBay.

Where did you find one? I found one at Play n Trade last month but it unfortunately didn't work.

Its a grocery store with an electronics department stuck in there. I've looked around there before, but hadn't seen that game.

I'm so glad Nintendo switched from points to real money as the currency for their 3DS shop. I really missed paying sales tax on digital items.

While I agree with SKJ that I like seeing the transactions in real money (much like the Sony Store), I'm going to disagree with his enjoyment of taxes.
