I mean, it's explicable to miss him given he's in heavy makeup and is on screen so briefly, but as a long time PTA-phile I feel I should have known this from the start.

When you're a fan of film, there is invariably going to be a performer that you cannot stand until a role comes along that changes your mind. Spencer (2021) changed my mind about Kristen Stewart. Playing the role of Princess Diana in the waning years of her marriage to Prince Charles, Stewart disappears and Di is on your screen.
During the happy scenes, I found myself grinning ear to ear. During the serious and sad scenes, and there are many, I felt genuine concern for the person.
Stewart is the star here. The supporting cast is of little consequence, save for maybe the two palace employees (you'll know when you watch). The actor playing Prince Charles (Jack Farthing) looked more like John Glover made a baby with Jake Gyllenhaal than anyone I'd believe as a royal.
It is a lovely film, but it lives and dies on the performance of one person and probably why it was not included in the Best Picture nominee list. I'm pleased with the film, I'm always happy to take in something about Diana. And further, I enjoy being proved wrong by performers doing good work. I don't know if Stewart was the best actress of cinema in 2021 but she definitely gained a LOT of credibility for the rest of her career. Well done, bravo, and kudos. She did the people's princess proud.

They do this every year. Thearten to not air all the awards and then revert back after tons of backlash. Just leave well enough alone. You can't win, Academy.

I finally got around to watching Licorice Pizza and it was very strange. I enjoyed the viewing experience, each individual performer knocked it out the park with what their job was. The narrative, when pieced together, was the strange part. I feel like a negative review wouldn't be proper, but I can't specifically write a glowingly positive review either because there are a few things that don't deserve praise. There are loose strings I wish were tied up.

The controversy around the main plot is nothing new, we've probably all talked in circles in our personal lives about the double standard that persists when it's an older woman/younger male. I think this whole forum is pretty much on the same page, creepy is creepy regardless of who is older. I hesitate to say "no comment" in that I was in a relationship with a woman ten years older, but I was 25, she was 35, not 15, 25 as in the film. I was a consenting adult fully understanding of the implications and side eye we'd catch. Gary, in this film, is still biologically growing in his prefrontal cortex and not capable of thinking things through, as with any teenager. I haven't dug too deep into the criticisms and defenses of the film, but I think it needs to be pointed out that Alana is pretty damn mentally ill. It doesn't let her off the hook, but when you have an adult in obvious need of counseling and a teenager that is overly sure of his or her self, and they're both attracted to each other, it will create a toxic relationship. And maybe that's what the film was going for. I'm writing this 5 minutes removed from viewing, so all of these words are reactionary and not really thought out.

I'm taking the stand that this is a film worth watching and fully expect people to really love or really hate it. I'm not sure why it is in the "Best Picture" discussion. It's definitely in the "very complex" discussion.

EDIT: The aesthetic of 70s era film stock looked amazing. I would still replace this with Spencer.

Just finished CODA. An enjoyable film but I agree, a really paint by numbers story. I thought the lead actress was very good but nothing else really stood out to me. Surprised that this was nominated for best film.

How did you happen to find CODA? I see its only on Apple TV so I've been trying to find other options....

We hit up Belfast still in the theater around here, and I was fairly impressed with this one. There was some narrative issues but this connected into the Ukraine stuff kind of well in a sense somewhat. Some heartfelt performances and alot of interesting themes presented here about religion and so much else. I dont think it has a chance to win best picture, but I think this might stand out more than I thought it would given whats happening in the world right now.

Watched CODA on AppleTV. I got 3 months free after buying a new TV.

I saw the trailer for Belfast and I feel like I just won't like it. Makes it hard to go into it with a fair mind.

Jesus Christ, CODA checked so many boxes in what I look for in a film. Just an all around beautiful film, masterful story telling, and perfectly written imperfect characters. This one drew out real emotion from me and not just "Hey good job to the movie makers" emotion. Nailed it, hard, for me.

I also need a Dr. V stand alone movie.

EDIT: The previous reviews shared by members about CODA are not lost on me. I think that's part of the fun, though, having different responses to the films.

West Side Story was pretty to look at, nice to listen to, and everyone did their parts well. It didn't really break any new narrative ground for me. I don't want to pick for shit on if it was less than it's predecessor or if it surpassed the earlier work, but I'm not a fan of Oscar nominations for films that are just updates of earlier works. I don't begrudge anyone that took part in this project, they did a great job at accomplishing what they wanted to do in creating movie art. They deserve praise. I just feel like it is occupying a spot that another film, an original work, could have. Just my two cents.

Belfast told a great story. I enjoyed the whole thing and appreciated everything it set out to do in a comparatively shorter run time than the usual Oscar stuff. But at the end of the film, it left me wanting more and not in a good way. I was enjoying it, threads were being tied up, and then there were a few lingering shots like something else was going to happen, but then it didn't. Good film, but not sure it holds up against other films in the category, this year. Visually it was stunning which says a LOT for a work filmed in mostly black & white. There's something in there about "why do I need a bluray copy of a black and white film?" being put to rest after this film. The child actors did a great job here. The adult actors I recognized delivered as usual. The story was quite complex, and the lesson I took from it was that imperfect people can still teach us a lot.

I was kind of disappointed in Belfast when I watched it last night. Some great acting and cinematography but I was disappointed (but also weirdly impressed) at how safe and family friendly that they could make a movie about The Troubles. I get Branagh's point about how there's a lot of humanity and community in wartime but I think he went so far in that direction that you could barely tell there was a war going on.

It's especially a jarring contrast cause 2nd to last movie I watched was one of the Best Documentary nominees Flee, which is the harrowing life story of an Afghani refugee in the '90s. I highly recommend that one. It's on Hulu. Firm thumbs in the middle for Belfast.

I almost wonder if Belfast is going to be an upset win due to its vague parallel to the current situation in Ukraine.

Simon Rex wins Best Male Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards just a few years after Adam Sandler. @Incandenza is probably going to have his first heart attack* after Pauly Shore wins an Independent Spirit Award for his gritty dramatic indie comeback.

*because he's so excited cause he loved the movie so damn much and loves to see a Gen Xer earn redemption.

King Richard is probably the best acting job Will Smith has done since Pursuit of Happyness. Maybe the man is just good at portraying interesting people (see: Muhammad Ali). The cast surrounding him also all turned in good performances to tell a lovely true story. The movie is just PG-13 enough to make me cautious to recommend it to too young of an audience, but it is definitely something I would want to show to my niece and nephew when they are teens. Hard work pays off, but education first. I'm not sure if I was supposed to like Richard Williams because his character is so all over the place and the supporting characters all respond in kind. He seems to be a very complicated man.

I imagine Will Smith had to do a LOT of work on making sure he got the pattern of speech down correctly, and for that I'm glad he was nominated.

Gf and I checked out Denzel's performance in the Joel Coen directed Tragedy of Macbeth over the weekend. While this isnt my bag usually, I found myself immersed a bit in the unique way this was filmed, it certainly had some sort of storytelling that made me feel like I was watching a live theater performance on screen. The cinematography was pretty impressive for sure. Is this award winning stuff though? Certainly not as a whole (but it wasnt nominated for best picture, adapted screenplay, etc), and I thought Washington did a great job making the role his own a bit, but ultimately it was just kind of there in a sense. Doubt he will get the win but you never know since this is oscar bait 101 stuff.

Got some heavy oscar viewing this week....hoping to check out Worst Woman in the World, Dont Look Up, and Licorice Pizza with a side of the Oscar nominated live action short films, if time allows it!

I'm literally last person here to rail against cancel culture but when I found out extremely online people were upset about John Michael Higgins' dopey racist character in Licorice Pizza. If any of them actually saw the movie, they'd know he's the butt of jokes. If we can't laugh at racists, I don't know where we stand, ahem, as a society.

Also there's actually still a few white people who act like that around Asians. Chris Jericho talked like that during his interview with Shinsuke Nakamura on Talk is Jericho and he talked about speaking Engrish to better communicate with Japanese wrestlers in at least one of his books.

So made it through a few Oscar stuff this past week/weekend....

Dont Look Up; The runtime was super bloated for this, had some oh snap moments a bit in terms of connecting to current culture points that I enjoyed, some of the characters were full satire rips of certain notables like Trump and I guess, Carl Sagan (Mark Rylance had trouble with this role) but that's really all I can say in terms of quality. I guess the performances were ok but rightfully so, nobody got nominated for said performances here. I can see why this went direct to Netflix too, studios were probably scoffing at the blending of a disaster film of sorts mixed with the heavy handiness of culling out wokeness and other culture issues. I just really didn't like this and I'm frankly shocked this got ANY noms, but I guess I understand it with the heavy pushing into urgently referencing issues that the country as a whole has fallen into in the last five or so years particularly.

Worst Person in the World: I would have had this film as a best pic nod, but I suppose they didnt want to just duplicate best foreign films too much into best picture, but this was so much fucking better than Dont Look Up. This was one of those films that just felt like real life, real emotions, real responses to conflict, just a real take on life in general. I liked how this moved in seperate chapters, it gave it breathing room a bit in the narrative and flowed well for an over two hour film that really not much happened, but so much heartfelt moments occured. Really excellent film.

You see, what should have happened here is Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman should have broken the fourth wall and said directly into the camera "We're Alana Haim and Cooper Hoffman and we say racism is bad."

Was Will Smith straight up cussing out Chris Rock? My feed had that entire part muted.

It was. Rock seemed shook up and incredulous that a joke about GI Jane would piss him off so much.
