As for Smith's fallen star, he's had a big career slump in the last decade, box office wise, or maybe we've forgotten everything he did between After Earth and Gemini Man, with only Suicide Squad and Aladdin standing out in terms of gross. Successful producer in that time? Yes. As big a draw as a movie star as he was between Independence Day and Hitch? Not really.

The official Smith apology, late in arrival likely because it had to be strenuously reviewed and revised by several PR people before being released, is "fine".
If this was the MTV Awards or the People's Choice or some shit I could buy the idea that it was a work of some kind maybe. Not at the Oscars and not on the biggest night of Will Smith's professional career. There is no upside to doing this for Smith. Yes he isn't as big as box office draw as he was. He's in a different phase of his career where he's as mentioned doing far more things behind the scenes and winning accolades. Being involved in this is the exact kind of shit that closes doors.

So it turned out that the Academy told Will to leave and he refused, then they wound up giving him his award because all of it happened so quickly. So he punked them out too, but I get the feeling this is about to turn into a Chappelle's Show skit where he starts getting dropped from projects because people don't want to work with him.

Harvey Weinstein still has all his Oscars. They gave an Oscar to Roman Polanski just a few years ago, who fled the country after raping a 13 year old, to a standing ovation. The Academy trying to take the high road in this is hilarious.
They just now say, days later, that they asked him to leave instead of saying this right away? He'll be brought in so they can hear his side before making their decision.
