Cook, Serve, Delicious! is getting a big, free update in November. It'll include a bunch of local multi-player modes.

So I busted out Civ5, because I forgot I owned it. Though I'm wishing I bought the Complete Edition instead of Vanilla. Anyways, been messing about with a few mods and having a lot of fun. Got a mod that gives a reasonable world map for Vanilla and each country starts off in their starting point. Also got a mod that replaces all the secondary units for Civs that have 2 and replaces it with an building for them. So like America gets the Mall.

I'm thinking of doing like all 19 Civs I've got and the 28 City-States and try playing that. Though I'm wondering what Civ to play. What do you guys recommend? I'm not playing as India though, because I like Peacemonger Ghandi as my villain.

I just bought a new laptop. It has Windows 8. This is my first windows 8 experience. What the fucking fuck?
It came preloaded with a lot of stupid apps that would be useful on a phone but have no use for me on a damn PC.

That's my main issue with Windows 8. It functions like it was designed with a touchscreen or tablet in mind, and not a desktop computer.

Upgrade to 8.1 of you're not already on that, then set it to boot to desktop and not that tiles shit. You're still going to hate it but it's a lot better then it was when it launched.

Why do I need a maps app? I can go to mapquest!

Yeah, I haven't even given that shit a second look since 8.1. It does seem to run a lot faster than the pile of shit Vista did.

So what's the difference between 8 and 8.1? I just bought this brand new at Best Buy so I assume it has 8.1.
I'm doing most of my work out of the desktop view. I do have a touch screen on the laptop which is pretty cool.

Also when did they start making most laptops without a god damn CD/DVD drive? This laptop was only $429 though but it seems to do everything I need it to do.

8.1 brings back the Start Menu button and basically let's you boot right into desktop mode and completely ignore the Metro menu entirely.

Okay I don't see that on mine. Unless there is something you can direct me to to find out how to do it?

So I just installed word and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the Word icon on my desktop. I can get it pinned to the taskbar and on the tile screen but not my damn desktop.

This is what the Taskbar looks like on Windows 8. No Windows/Start button:

If it has the newer Windows logo in the corner, that's the new Start button, and you're on Windows 8.1.

If all else fails, press the Windows key, type in "System", select just System (not System Restore or anything else), and that screen will show you what version of Windows you're on, as well as some hardware specs.

If you are on Windows 8, to update to Win8.1:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/update-from-windows-8-tutorial

You do need to have all critical/important Windows Updates completed before the big upgrade tile will appear in the Windows Store.

Ah. I do have 8.1. But that button takes me to the tiles, not a start menu.

Yeah, they didn't actually bring back the menu. Just the button.

There are third-party programs which will bring back a traditional Start Menu. I just ignore the tiles/Start Screen for the most part, so I haven't tried any myself. But Classic Shell is a free one:
http://www.classicshell.net/

A more traditional Start Menu (with tiles) is returning as the default in Windows 10. And they're still offering the option of the full Win8-style Start Screen, for those who like it.

We briefly interrupt this conversation on how to make Windows 8 slightly less shitty to throw in a plug for the return of GADD! http://culturecrossfire.com/gaming/gaming-with-gadd-24/ Largest GADD ever at over 3100 words. That's a lot of talk about forcibly removing clothing from people!

What? I also have GPS in my car.

This came preloaded with an Amazon app. Why don't I go to Amazon?

The appeal of mobile apps versus a website is kind of over my head as well. I admittedly haven't used many of them, but they seem like simplified (i.e. less-functional) platform-locked websites designed for a touch interface. They may use camera/mic/GPS functions, and ring/buzz/flash with notifications, and integrate themselves with other apps and services. But I don't especially want any of that.

Because the websites aren't as optimized for mobile use as the apps are.

I don't know if anyone here watches Rooster Teeth stuff, but they just got bought by Fullscreen. This makes me nervous as hell about the future of their content, especially as I feel like it's already been going downhill for the last few months.

Re: Random Thoughts & Topics v2

Watching some of the New Legacy Inc. runs of WWE 2K15 made me remember when my 14-year-old cousin was completely stupefied after I told him that games used to be finished when they hit stores and that DLC was never an option.

What about Assassin's Creed Rogue? I'm still way back on AC3.

I haven't played any since AC3 but I want to. I didn't know Rogue was just for the previous gen which is good since I don't have the new gen. AC3 is my least favourite of the games (not counting the first which doesn't age well in comparison to the more advanced games) but it had fun aspects. It's too bad Unity but maybe its things that can be fixed with patches?

I had a bad experience renting nba 2k15 and its servers being constantly fucking down a few weeks ago and since it needs to check the servers for everything even if you aren't playing online it was total bullshit. Supposedly this is a problem every year for the first month or two as well. I'll try the game again in December maybe.
