I upgraded the tv in my bedroom (where I play games) and decided to get a ps4 while I was already dropping money. Mostly so I can play the last of us when they put it on ps4, but also to not miss out on good sony exclusives this generation. I figured I'd get one eventually. I actually had a ps3 when it came out but I hated it and gave it away. I don't hate this one...so I'm back as a multi platform guy for the first time since like 07! Yay games!

SONY PLZ!

First, this update (1.70) is great. Lots of great features added. A lot of amazing "Stealh Features" added. Execution of some of the major ones, however, leaves something to be desired.

Couple things..

1. When rendering your final movie in the new Share app, you can't "minimize" it and go do other things. I guess it uses the same chip to do the rendering that it does to run games, etc. It pauses the rendering and doesn't continue until you focus on that app again. :(

2. Holy hell is the USB transfer slow. This, coupled with the above comment, is going to make Twitch archiving much more appealing than exporting to USB and uploading to YouTube.

IMG_20140430_124149.jpg

..and you can't even minimize that transfer either. I just stopped it at 64mb with still 80 minutes to go. Brutal. It essentially makes the ShareFactory app useless with all of its transitions and editing features.. if I have to wait that fucking long to transfer it to a USB stick, I'm never going to use it.

Apparently the USB speed could be that I may be using a USB 2.0 stick and not a 3.0. I have no idea how to check, so I guess I'll just buy a brand new one to see if that's any faster.

83 minutes for 900 MB is absurdly slow, even for USB 2.0. That's 180 KB/s. I've got what is apparently a quite slow USB 2.0 flash drive; I just copied a 308 MB zip file to it, which took 1m42s. That's about 3 MB/s.

"Select pre-ordered games" - apparently. So if MLB falls in that category then you should be good to go.

Automatic Pre-download: No more waiting until after a game is released to start downloading select pre-ordered games from PlayStation Store. This new feature allows you to get to your games faster by automatically downloading select pre-ordered games up to several days in advance of the release, so that it’s ready to play as soon as the game is released on launch day. There’s also a countdown timer prior to the release of the game so you’ll know how soon your game will be available for you to start playing.

Here's the full itemized list for the update via the PSBlog..

Option to Disable HDCP for Games: This highly requested feature will allow you to have the option to turn off HDCP for games so you can capture longer gameplay sessions directly from your HDMI output and export them elsewhere.

USB Export Option for Captured Gameplay: It’s now even easier to show off your heroic gaming moments and the SHAREfactory videos you create with the world using this feature to export your videos and screenshots to a USB drive. Just click on the DUALSHOCK 4 SHARE button, save your gameplay on a USB drive, and then share your proudest achievements on other social networks and other video platforms.

Live Broadcasting in HD and Archiving Support: We’ve increased the resolution for live broadcasts so you and your friends can watch games livestreamed in 720p HD. You can also archive your broadcasts on Twitch or Ustream and watch them again later.

New SHARE Options: We’ve got a number of new SHARE settings that will give you better control of what you want to share with your friends. Here is what you can look forward to:
Change the default gameplay recording time in the SHARE menu under Video Clip Settings.
Save only the video clips and screenshots you want by selecting Upload Screenshots or Upload Video Clips for each capture. Also upload video clips and screenshots during your live gameplay broadcasts.
Select specific Facebook audiences to share each video or screenshot with.

New DUALSHOCK 4 Options: New light bar settings have been added for DUALSHOCK 4, allowing you to change it to Bright, Medium or Dim in the Settings menu. The touchpad has also been updated, allowing you to navigate the on-screen keyboard using the DUALSHOCK 4 touchpad.

New Friends Options: It’s now easier to find Friends and send requests with the ability to search Friends-of-Friends, view Mutual Friends on another user’s profile, and accept Friend requests directly from the Friends list.

New Trophies Sort Option: You can now sort Trophies by rarity in the Options menu.

PlayStation Store Payment Support: Similar to PS3, we’re introducing Alternative Payment Methods (APMs) for PS4 for content purchased on PS Store, starting with PayPal support.

More PlayStation Camera Commands: More voice commands are added to PlayStation Camera, allowing you to launch the apps installed on your PS4 with the sound of your voice.

New PlayStation Plus Icon: For Plus members, you’ll now have the PS Plus icon appear next to your SEN ID on the login screen, home screen and other areas across the PS4 system’s sleek user interface.

Music Unlimited SHARE Options: With a Music Unlimited subscription, you can easily share your favorite songs with your friends by pressing the SHARE button on your DUALSHOCK 4.

Hmm...I wonder if there's anyway to tell which games will and wont. Though you'd think that the games that they have for preorder in the store that are in the spotlight section (like MLB has been and Last of Us already is) would make the cut. I work nights so it's always a bummer when a game comes out that night (yay!) and then I have to wait hours for it to download (boo) and it ends up that I have to wait until I get up the next day anyway

Okay, so it was my USB stick. I picked up a Lexar 3.0 stick last night and tried it out.. blazing fast. I guess it's been longer than I thought since I last bought a USB memory stick.

Anyway, I did some random test footage from FFXIV so I'll be uploading that and posting it in the ARR thread later today. :)

I stepped into a Wal-Mart while the missus was shopping at a clothing outlet yesterday afternoon. They had a nice clearance sale on some PS3 games. I picked up The Amazing Spider-Man and Mass Effect 3 for $5 each.

The annual PS+ refresh seems to be happening soon. These games are scheduled to be cycled out on June 3rd:

Monthly titles:
Stick It To the Man (PS4)
Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 (PS3)

Annual titles:
RESOGUN (PS4)
Little Big Planet Karting (PS3)
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Single Player Mode (PS3)

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/05/26/playstation-plus-limbo-free-for-members/

Unless they're unexpectedly scaling back on the Instant Game Collection, there should be new annual titles coming soon. (XCOM may be sticking around, I guess.) Monthly previews are usually posted on the last Thursday of the month.

So....help me my PS4 brethren. What is on the near horizon for PS4 that is must-have? Watchdogs just came out, still not completely sold on it, even though it is getting pretty good ratings.

I have 2 games to trade in, no idea what kind of credit I will receive for them.

Just want to get a solid game.

We're entering the dry part of the year after the things that were pushed back and before the good stuff comes out in fall. Pretty dry until probably Destiny in September. Summer is the time to try and put a dent in the backlog.

Infamous Second Son is a good game that shows off the power of the hardware. It's worth playing through twice, if you liked the other Infamous games you will like the new one.

The new Wolfenstein game rocks hardcore. I'm not even an FPS guy, but its a blast to play. Probably about a 10-12 hour campaign, no multiplayer.

MLB The Show if you like baseball... the Show is a great baseball game.

As far as down the road... nothing coming real soon. New UFC game next month looks really good. Other than that... got a gap till fall releases.

Murdered: Soul Suspect (out next week) is definitely on my radar simply because I loved Ghost Trick, but I still have no clue if I actually want to play it.

I like the sound of the concept on paper. I will look for reviews next week.

....yes I registered to go. I'm hoping for 2006 train wreck or 2013 awesome crowd, but I'm expecting the usual boring.

Sony announced that starting in June there will be 2 free games for Vita, PS3 and PS4. Nothing really standing out to me. PS3 is getting NBA2K14 and Sly Cooper. I'll check out Sly, but I'm just not a fan of the NBA. They had NBA Jam for free on plus about a year ago and I hardly played it. Game was alright but I just don't like most of the players in the NBA to warrant playing as them.

There's also some replies on the European blog saying the annual PS+ titles are not being replaced.

In light of Arkham being delayed, are there ANY next gen games coming this year that are A) Not HD upgrades of PS3 games or B) Multiformat aka on every format including PS3, because I cannot think of any. Since Launch i own two PS4 exclusives, Killzone and Infamous. Im really tempted to start buying games for the PS3 again cause they are the same and cheaper.

PSN started an RPG flash sale today, running through Friday. The list seems to be still overpriced for the most part, but Ni No Kuni is on there for just $5. Hell of a deal for anyone who enjoys old school JRPGs.

Murdered Soul Suspects has been getting shitty reviews :(

As soon as I saw stealth combat, I instantly got worried. I'll probably still pick it up down the line when it gets cheaper.

Joystiq sez:
PS4 owners can now buy games like Towerfall and Octodad: Dadliest Catch by stuffing their wallets full of moola from their PayPal accounts. Those looking to fund their digital purchases in this manner can do so on their PS4 consoles during the checkout process by selecting "Add Funds," then the PayPal option and picking the amount of dough to add to their wallet.

Alternatively, players will be able to access the chunk of change in their PayPal accounts via their Sony Entertainment Network accounts, which are tied to their PSN wallets. Similar to the console method, eager buyers simply need to log in, select the "Account" tab, then the "Wallet" section, click "Add funds to Wallet," then follow the instructions to use PayPal as their funding option. PayPal funding, which was added to PS3 in November, is available to PS4 owners in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Chile and Argentina.

Rented Soul Suspect. It's.....not very good. Very boring, you basically just go through the motions with no choice of anything.
