I'm seeing it tomorrow morning. If the 3d is good, I'll see almost all of them in theaters again- except for Episode 2. I can't watch that piece of shit without the commentary track on to drown out the craptacular dialogue.

From the reviews I have read it seems the picture is horrid and the only standout 3d is the pod racing.

I've only ever seen episode 1 twice. I saw episode 2 like 3 times in theaters and tons of time on DVD. Loved it for some reason. I've actually only seen episode 3 once all the way through.

George Lucas is the PT Barnum of his time. I'm officially impressed by how many times he can fool people.

The Podrace was ok, but the only standout scene for me was the space battle vs the Droid Control Ship. In the end, though, the film wasn't shot for 3D. Instead of popping out of the screen, it sank back in, if that makes sense.

You'd think, with as many times as George has changed his movies, he would have added some new effect scenes designed for 3D, though.

The only part worth watching in ep1 is the fight at the end, IMO.

I agree. I love Jar Jar's antics on the battlefield!

Seeing it this afternoon with the Rifftrax in my ear. Cnets review said the 3d conversion was good. I don't need things popping out on the screen to enjoy 3d, so I'm mildly excited for the visuals. Gonna need the Rifftrax and alcohol to make it through though. I'm not even sure that'll be enough to survive ATOC, but I've got a year to worry about that.

I fired on my episode 1 blu ray last night + my faux 3d tv settings.

Im sure it was as good as the cinemas version.

Bits & Pieces Vol. 9

From my favourite retro commercials channel on youtube. The last few volumes of 80s Commercials were from the 1984 airing of ANH on CBS, so this was just an extra.

I finally broke down and got Episode II from Netflix. 15 minutes in and it is simply awful. Natalie Portman, a supposedly good actress, sounds like a 14 year old girl and we're supposed to buy her as an important Senator?

Christiensen is dreadful as Anakin, but everyone knows that already.

When I re-watched Episode I and II for the first time, just before Episode III came out, I was astonished to realize just how much worse Episode II really is.

Oh my god, this may be the worst "romance" plot I've ever seen in a movie. Anakin should have been maced or beaten by Padme's guards about four times already.

There's like three different plots going on here that barely connect to each other.

Yeah I didn't "get" Natalie Portman as a talented actress until after the Star Wars movies. I was trying to figure out why critics talked about her like she was anything other than a pretty girl because she was so awful in the movies. Just goes to show that even the best can be dragged down by a horrid script and bad direction. Haden Christiensen I've never seen much signs of improvement from though. It's too bad they didn't have more people like Ford and Fisher that were willing/able to tell Lucas when his script was shit. Of course back then he wasn't a billionaire who thought he could do no wrong.

She was fantastic in Leon and that was years before Star Wars.

It also probably helped that Kasdan wrote ESB and ROTJ and Lucas had numerous people punch up the dialogue in ANH. I'm not fond of Hayden either, but between the flat performances of Portman, Jackson, and Neeson, there one's no one who could save these scripts. That McGregor and McDiarmid managed to pull of a dignified and/or fun performances is a testament to them.

There's a great New York Times interview where in the most polite way possible Portman says she had to convince people that she could actually act after the SW films.

I tapped out for now an hour and zero plot movement in. Fucking EDWARD AND BELLA had more goddamn chemistry than Anakin and Padme.

Now I'm watching Plinkett's review again. I should have just done this from the beginning.

Its funny reading some of the early drafts of the original films and seeing how god awful Lucas was at dialogue, even then.

From an initial version of the Empire script, Han to Leia:

"Don't worry. I'm not going to kiss you here. You see, I'm quite selfish about my pleasure, and it wouldn't be much fun for me now."

You can just feel the romantic tension leap off the page can't ya?

The fact that AOTC was somehow worse than Phantom Menace still boggles my mind.

It's not all fun.

I really liked AOTC in 2002. Mostly because it looked pretty.

It really works on so many levels..

Re: Star Wars Thread: Oh, yeah! I almost forgot! It's not all fun!

I can never remember where it is, but somewhere either on the blu ray set, or the original dvd. There is a making of feature which shows Hayden absolutly nailing a GRRR IM DARKSIDE! scene, which then sees lucas give him direction more towards: "dont show too much emotion, we want anakin to seem conflicted, so tone it down".

Yes Hayden was useless, but Lucas also directed him to be godawful.

Watching Episode III (I might as well now). Plinkett's reviews really have tainted this since all I can think of is his criticisms.

Why is Obi-Wan cracking puns all the time suddenly? Was he always a wise-ass?

I think his punning was meant to show how easy a relationship he had with Anakin, as opposed the the confrontational relationship they had in Ep 2.

Because in A New Hope Obi-wan said Anakin was a good friend, and we got NO sense of that in Episode 2, so Lucas had to try and midiclorian force it.
