The first round of GwarBQ acts have been announced. The Descendents, Goatwhore, Dead Earth Politics, and...MC Chris.

Ughhhhhhhhhhhh this is going to be an OzzFest situation.

Gwar is touring with Battlecross and Butcher Babies this fall. What better way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the band than by touring with Hot Topic-approved acts.

**sigh**

Brockie...you magnificent bastard...your brothers are lost without you.

Re: GwarBQ
Of course I was on the fence until GHOUL was announced.

Also, this is hilarious. The charges have been dropped but that people actually go out in daylight dressed like they're going to a show 24/7 amuses the hell out of me.

Haven't listened to it yet. I'll give my thoughts on it eventually, or soon. Whenever.

These guys are opening for Mayhem here in November. I think I'll be checking the show out.

I meant in a sense that they don't rely on whatever is trendy in modern Black Metal and whatnot.

That I will agree with. As much as I enjoyed Nachtmystium's Assassins, there's an awful lot of black metal that seems more like indie rock with black metal recording techniques than anything else. At least Watain understands what they play.

I think a part of that is just the fact that things have changed over time. There are several bands that might play that (such as Deafheaven-though they themselves will tell you they aren't really a Black Metal band and that genre is just one of the influences. You can't say that for Liturgy, who are basically a group of indie kids from Brooklyn who like to think they have transcended the genre.*) but that's just a part of the times. Besides, bands like Fleurety and Arcturus were experimenting with the perceived sound of Black Metal years ago. It really isn't all that new to toy with the genre. Also, I don't think any genre should always play by the rules. To do so is kinda close minded, and if it didn't happen we'd just have more shitty Burzum and Darkthrone clones. That and if it pisses hardcore Black Metal fans off, then so be it. Websites like that one Red Hot Thumbtack (remember him) frequented are kinda proof that purists in that particular genre are terrible, and they kinda deserve to be pissed off/fucked with.

*That or they are just trolling. If that's the case-well, it really isn't hard to troll Black Metal purists.

Amazingly, that site is still around. Last I heard of them, they were trying to start a metal equivalent to Gamergate (it did't take off).

Haven is slowly growing on me. It's bittersweet that Karevik sounds so much like Khan. It's nice to have a seamless transition in vocals, but I don't want to think of the new guy as a poor man's Khan.

I was able to see them live with both frontmen. Karevik is getting a lot more comfortable in the role. He has a bit of a clearer voice than Khan, and doesn't do the growling/grunting that Khan would do from time to time. Either way, the band is still putting out really good albums. Here is a clip from their set at Wacken Open Air in 2008, and Khan's voice is completely shot.

So, thoughts on albums this year

-The new Iron Maiden is great outside of one song in "Tears of a Clown" (No, it isn't a Smokey Robinson cover) The rest is solid, and it's nice to hear them continue to embrace progressive rock.

-Dear Abyssal: Where have you been all my life?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Du2HPASAbXo

This is how it's done.

-One will argue "Oh, it's Hipster bullshit!" or "Not real metal!", but I don't care: the new Deafheaven album is great. Maybe their best yet.

-The new Paradise Lost album is a really nice surprise. Probably their best since the 2005 self titled.

-The new Enslaved-it's Enslaved. It's great.

-The new High on Fire is good but not great. I like it, but it's a step down from their last album.

-The new Leprous is a letdown. I wanna like it more, but it just sounds kinda bland to me.

-Amorphis-Let's face it, the last good album they did was "Skyforger" and they've been repeating themselves ever since.

-Not too impressed with the new Ghost album. It has some solid moments, but the end result feels middling to me.

-Finally, the new Slayer-I don't wanna call it a Slayer album TBH. In fact, it's pretty bad IMO, like a retread of "God Hates Us All".

Still have yet to hear the new ones from: Cattle Decapitation, Uncle Acid, Soilwork, Napalm Death and Arcturus.

In news that will severely deplete the already thin quality of the MA/RI scene, Abnormality has signed to Metal Blade records. This is fantastic for them as they're easily one of the better US death metal bands going today, and, having met and partied with them, they're all cool as shit people who absolutely deserve this opportunity.

Aborted have released the video for their new single, "Termination Redux," which is the title track of their forthcoming EP. The video's quite NSFW, so I'm spoiler tagging it, and the song is...well, it gets considerably better around halfway through, but the production is obvious that they're on Century "every great band that's signed with us in the last decade has quickly began to be terrible" Media and I feel like it's only a matter of time before Goremageddon sounds like it was done by a different band.

Since it pretty much was. The lineup, outside of vocalist Sven de Caluwé, changed by 2006, explaining the decline in quality from Slaughter & Apparatus onward. It's rarely a good sign when the only constant in a band is the vocalist, and it's almost always a bad omen in metal.

So, the only 2015 release I really got around to finding was the new Black Dahlia Murder release, Abysmal, which is middle-of-the-road TBDM. It seems like the kind of album that a band throws together just because management is pressuring them to come up with a new album. It's not terrible, but after how great Nocturnal, Deflorate, Ritual, and Everblack were it's hard not to be disappointed.

Currently, the only 2016 release I'm stoked for is Abnormality's Metal Blade debut, which should be out in April/May.

I kinda dig this, actually, but I've also been getting more and more into the rockabilly/honky tonk style in the last year or two.
