Three of my favorites right here. One got me into metal as a whole, one is still the archetype for cyber metal (no pun intended), and one stands out as being one of the most brutal releases ever.

The ugliest man alive, Jorn Lande has a new album coming out early next year. I'm quite impressed with the vocals on this preview video.

I don't know why it took me this long to appreciate Deeds of Flesh, but god damn I'm really digging them. Great label they run, too, if you're into brutal and/or technical death (Unique Leader Records).

So, this group re-recorded St. Anger but left out the snare drum. I like it!

It's still not good, but man "Frantic" sounds even better now.

I've sometimes contemplated doing a project that was nothing but re-doing Metallica's '90s output as actual metal songs. I have a feeling "Ain't My Bitch" would sound a lot like "Blackened" if I did it the way I'm thinking of it.

Now that the full video has been released, I can say there is a great song here, but Jorn Lande has produced the new front runner for cheesiest metal video in history.

I'm honestly not sure. This is the first thing I've heard from them. Word is their frontman auditioned when Kamelot was looking for a new vocalist and made it into the final 3.

Edit: Their Facebook says that they have been a band since 1990 and have been through several changes in the lineup.

I don't keep up with the Metal scene anymore, but I saw this band Altar Beast open for Black Dahlia Murder a few months back, and listening to them, they seem to really represent a bunch of guys who grew up listening to lots of different styles of Metal because there is a little of everything in their songs. Really dig it.

That said, this is the kind of tech death I don't care for. It's not as bad as Brain Drill on the "totally aimless wankery" front, but it's close. I like my tech death to be more on the brutal side (Suffocation, Dying Fetus, Odious Mortem), though, so that's a major factor here.

Since it seems all I ever do is hate on shit, here's Gotsu Totsu Kotsu, some brilliant death metal from Japan:

The video for Nightwish's newest song, "Elan" was released today. It gets decent in the last minute but the first few minutes were pretty boring and uneventful, IMO.

I'll admit to not totally hating some tracks off the first two KE releases.
The best thing KSE ever did is release this shirt:

It's such a shame that a better band didn't go there first.

So after years of not going to any metal concerts due to living in a out-of-the-way location, I'm finally taking advantage of my new locale and going to see the following over the next few months:

Enslaved
At the Gates + Converge
Psychostick
Sleep
Mastodon (at motherfucking Red Rocks)
Ufomammut

Electric Wizard is also coming here next month but they were sold out by the time I heard they were coming and the tix on Stubhub are way overpriced for my blood

Poorly written article explaining that Metallica has been steadily losing money since 2010. Watch me play "Invisible Kid" on this tiny violin with my taint in remembrance.

Scott Clendenin, who played bass for Death since 96 (and performed on "Sound of Perserverance") died at the age of 48.

The new Nightwish is available in various places. What can I say, it's kind of dull. They hired Floor Jansen, who is one of if not the most incredible female metal voices, and she is forced to sing very softly throughout the album. The final song is over 25 minutes long, and is impressive from a technical standpoint, but it's a really uneventful 25+ minutes.

I have rarely found any song over 10 minutes in length to be interesting throughout. Even though I love Disillusion's Back to Times of Splendor as an album, the title track (which is still an incredible song) is actually made better in a few YouTube cuts I've listened to that cuts out about 4 minutes in the middle that are entirely tacked-on.

In other news, the GwarBQ is set for August 28. No lineup announced yet (besides Gwar), but I'm hoping for a showing by either Ghoul or Cannabis Corpse.
