I listened to the new Nightwish live double CD, Showtime, Storytime and it's pretty damn awesome. Floor is an awesome singer. I hope they come to the US and I'm able to see them. I've seen both the previous singers, so it'd be cool to have seen all incarnations.

It's hands down my favorite live album of the year. The girl can sing and is quite alive on stage. That was one thing I preferred about Annette over Tarja. She actually looked happy to be on stage and seemed alive, while Tarja just stood there like a statue. That was the best version of Ghost Love Score that I've heard yet, and the future for Nightwish is looking pretty bright.

So, I had a thought today while driving and "Free Bird" came on. It links back to one I had a few years ago, actually, one brought on by the Exodus cover of "Low Rider" and one of the rare instances where I listen to the radio.

What are some covers of non-metal songs you'd like to hear from metal bands? I think a Vader cover of "In the Air Tonight" would be interesting, if only for Piotr's vocals, and Fleshgod Apocalypse doing "Free Bird" would probably result in something generically Fleshgod but still somewhat interesting.

Within Temptation has released a collaboration with Howard Jones, formerly of Killswitch Engage. A bit on the repetitive side, but I like it.

You know who Howard sounds like here? Matt Barlow. That's not a bad thing, either, because Barlow's voice is really good when it's not drowned out by Jon Schaeffer's douchebaggery.

So...best of 2013 for everybody?

Power Trip - Manifest Decimation
Carcass - Surgical Steel
The Black Dahlia Murder - Everblack
Gwar - Battle Maximus
Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats - Mind Control
Fleshgod Apocalypse - Labyrinth
Mechina - Empyrean
Suffocation - Pinnacle of Bedlam
Exhumed - Necrocracy

Of them, I'd say that Uncle Acid, Gwar, Black Dahlia, and Power Trip have been my favorites.

I feel dirty for forgetting that Defeated Sanity's excellent Passages Into Deformity came out last year, as well as Katalepsy's Autopsychosis.

A track from Within Temptation's new album featuring Xzibit, (yes that Xzibit) on backing vocals, starting at 1:29. Your brain is now broken.

Pretty solid. A little more "mature," I guess, than what they've typically done, but still plenty awesome.

I'm addicted to Edguy's cover of "Rock Me Amadeus" from their new album, Space Police. It sounds pretty much just like the original, just a tad harder, but they did a great job with it.

Also, Delain has released a new album. A couple of the songs feature guest vocals from Nightwish's Marco Hietala. Here is "Your Body is a Battleground".

I've been meaning to post that for a couple of weeks. It's an awesome album and those songs with Marco are great.

The new Agalloch is really good, but it's also probably their weakest LP so far. Still worth a listen though.

So, I recently discovered this band called Sabaton. This guy's voice is awesome!

Never heard of them before, but I figured I'd give it a shot since we seem to like many of the same bands. I loved it, and you're right about the singers voice. I'm downloading their discography now to see how their other stuff stand up.

Sabaton are one of the few PM bands I kinda dig. His voice isn't extreme falsetto like Rhapsody or Hammerfall, and it's not just noodling like Dragonforce, and not just cheesy Tolkien worship like every other PM band. They do a great cover of Amon Amarth's "Twilight of the Thunder God," too.

Which makes their supporting slot on Amon Amarth's summer US tour interesting to me. I'm kinda hoping that members of both get together at the end of the Amon Amarth set to play that. Sadly, the closest they're coming to me is in VT or CT, so I won't be going.
