Thanks for the tips, guys. I downloaded Suffocation's Breeding the Spawn, Hour of Penance's The Vile Conception (amazing, definitely impressed by these Italian bastards), Dying Fetus' History Repeats EP (some damn solid covers on there, especially the one of "Born in a Casket"), all three Gorerotted LPs (Mutilated in Minutes, Only Tools and Corpses, and A New Dawn for the Dead), and the Rotted's sole release to this point Get Dead or Die Trying (and yes, I know the Rotted is just Gorerotted doing more hardcore-infused death metal as opposed to the goregrind they initially did).

Now, to convert most of it to AAC so it can go on the ol' iPod.

Buddy called today saying he had an extra ticket to a Dream Theater & Trivium concert and offered it to me. I couldn't go because it was in middle of the week plus I'm not very familiar with either band. Are either any good?

Your mileage will vary on Dream Theater. Extremely progressive and often a band that only the really nerdy uber-music tools listen to. A lot of their stuff is downright brilliant, though, and at least interesting from a technical level. Vocals suck, though, in the sense that it sounds like Mariah Carey is trying to sing over Metallica and Rush songs.

Trivium...eh. Their best song is blatant rip-off of At the Gates' classic "Blinded By Fear," as in "let's take the opening riff and just slow it down slightly." The band itself is talented but do nothing you haven't heard a million times before and better.

There'll be lots of absurdly long guitar solos and probably laser beams during Dream Theater. If you're going for free or nearly free there are way worse ways to spend your evening. I don't care for either band, personally, but I wouldn't turn down a free ticket if someone else drove.

What everyone else said. Be prepared to sit through a few 15+ minute songs.

That picture always makes me laugh.

Also, the new Wolves in the Throne Room album has unseated Ulcerate's "The Destroyers of All" as my fave metal album of the year. This is their best one yet.

I downloaded the new Alice Cooper album. I had to turn it off halfway through. Just hard to listen to. I also found out that Ke$ha worked on one of the songs on the album. What the hell was he thinking?

Mine's still the Gorod EP, mostly because they brought a flamethrower to a fist fight with the guitar work.

I *acquired* it as we'll. It was definitely a bit of a letdown. Still wouldn't be opposed to giving his live dvd a shot though. He always has good theatrics.

Fuck The Facts just released a pretty good one called Die Miserable. Heavy on the Gorguts in parts, and Nasum in others, but these guys have been around long enough and played with their sound enough for it to be cool. Besides, if you're putting together a death/grind album, those two bands are as good a template as there is.

My top two releases thus far this year have been Exmortus - Beneath the Fall of Time and Exhumed - All Guts, No Glory.

Until something better comes along, my top metal release of the year is Serenity's "Death and Legacy", with Cain's Offering's debut being a close second. Tarot's re-recording of Spell of Iron is fan-fucking-tastic as well.

My issue every year is that I usually pick up albums that came out the year before for "new" music, just because I'm a little poor and the stuff that gets the most hype is usually stuff I'm not interested in (see: Ghost, Howl, Baroness, etc.).

Got a chance to go through all of that new Craft in one sitting. It's my new frontrunner for 2011, and I'm normally not big on black metal at all. That one went right through me for some reason.

Don't like that at all. Vocals are mixed way too low, more sloppy than crazy, hate the guitar tone, needs more samples.
