Re: Call of Duty Game Thread

I think I don't play as much anymore because I've pretty much topped out at around a .92 or so K/D. My accuracy is a fucking travesty though. I completely gave up even trying to use LMGs because they have almost no positive qualities except MAYBE more ammo, but the fire rate is so low that you die in direct combat most times anyway and just start over with a fresh clip.

Oh, also...Marksman rules. You can see through walls. I never used it when the game first came out and now use it on everything but my Run class, where I do way better with Stalker. Breath and Impact are probably the two best perks for Hardcore too, especially Impact, because you can *REALLY* aggravate people by lighting them up through slabs of concrete and stuff. Recon is, quite literally, garbage. I usually run Blind Eye, Assassin, Marksman because, as has been stated earlier in this thread, fuck a bunch of helicopters.

Another asshole tip: It's fun to use the Airdrop Trap as a grenade.

Re: Call of Duty Game Thread

I find Recon isn't that bad, mostly because sometimes you can get lucky lobbing random flashbangs around and boom, there's a couple people tagged. Handier in team games I find, cuz I can tag people and even if I don't get them, my teammates will. I usually use Scavenger though, because I find I never have enough ammo otherwise.

That said, Marksman lets you see through walls? Is that when you get it Pro'ed? I think it's the only perk I don't have Pro'ed, because I never use sniper rifles (assault rifles only), and as a result, I only get a chance to level it up when using certain scopes.

Re: Call of Duty Game Thread

Well when you ADS, I have caught site of nametags behind walls, undercover, or farther away than I would normally be able to notice them without Marksman on. Particular mention goes to being able to see nametags traversing steps inside buildings and catching them either before they come out of cover or while they are hidden by way of the aforementioned Impact gun perk.

Maybe it was just a glitch. Like I said, haven't played much in the last two months. If you find that not working out, stick with Dead Silence as a stealthy backup.

I've been destroying people all night in MW3 with the CM-901. No mods beyond a red dot sight, just the assault rifle as-is and a good rhythm going.

Drop Zone is awesome.

I know it isn't CoD, but I don't think we have a general shooter thread...

Ghost Recon Future Soldier.

Anyone playing this?

Re: Call of Duty Game Thread

I may actually pick up Black Ops II if the gameplay's tighter than previous TreyArch titles.

Re: Call of Duty Game Thread

I found the first Black Ops to be pretty solid.

...

http://www.joystiq.com/2012/09/27/how-black-ops-2-handles-prestige-adds-levels-to-combat-traini/

How Black Ops 2 handles 'Prestige,' adds levels to Combat Training, and focuses on Party Games

In the last of many features revealed before Call of Duty: Black Ops 2's November 13 launch, we return to the all-important multiplayer.

Though hardcore shooter fans can throw themselves into the competitive arena and find fun, players with less skill often feel intimidated by the mode. Spawning and being beaten into the ground, as it turns out, isn't any fun.

There's a lot Treyarch wants to do to address that feeling, such as offering tiered League matches and improving matchmaking; however, that can't guarantee things will draw people into a world they may despise out of intimidation.

Combat Training
To increase confidence levels of players who see more Kill Cam than game, Treyarch has focused its attention on Combat Training, the mode meant to introduce players to multiplayer basics against AI controlled bots.

In Black Ops 2, Combat Training users can earn experience points and level their online soldier in a mode dubbed 'Boot Camp.' In this mode, players face off against a mixture of human players and bots in matches of Team Deathmatch. Players can earn full experience points and level up to a maximum level of 10, which Game Design Director David Vonderhaar refers to as "graduating."

If comfort levels aren't high enough to jump into the fray online, players can stay within Combat Training and play through its 'Objective' mode, where two teams of six (3 players, 3 bots) compete in objective-based game modes. Players can rank up beyond level 10 in this mode, but are only given half of the usual XP they would earn online.

'Bot Stomp' is an experience point-free mode where teams of six players battle six bots in any gametype they choose. Playing this mode is a great way to practice skills, learn maps and modes, and is a "really good way for newer players to experience the high end game," Vonderhaar says. All modes also include public matchmaking, to make finding optimal games easier.

Party On
Wager Matches have been abandoned in Black Ops 2, but in name only. Now dubbed 'Party Games,' favorites like Gun Game, One in the Chamber, Sharpshooter, and Sticks and Stones have returned. The mode's new name reflects Treyarch's attitude toward the modes, which are meant to be played by groups to have fun. Of course, matchmaking still exists for those looking for a quick pick-up game.

"We want you to play in a party, we encourage you to play with your friends," Vonderhaar adds. To entice players into the section of online play, Party Games – unlike Wager Matches – now offer experience points.

Changing the name may seem trivial, but the simple switch makes the mode much more inviting for less skilled players; players who may have felt the original name implied they would be gambling by entering the arena. We asked Treyarch if new Party Games would appear in Black Ops 2, but the team isn't talking.

Modes, Maps, More
During my multiplayer session we played through a new mode called 'Hardpoint,' which is inspired by traditional King of the Hill modes. Points on the map constantly move and it's up to your team to control the territory for longer than the other team.

Other modes confirmed during the presentation were classics like Team Deathmatch, Free For All, Demolition, Headquarters, Capture the Flag, Search and Destroy and the returning favorite Kill Confirmed.

Team Deathmatch, Kill Confirmed and Hardpoint are all available as multi-team matches for up to 18 players and up to six teams facing off.

Three new maps were featured during the presentation: 'Overflow,' battles on the ruined streets of Peshawar, Pakistan; 'Hijacked,' close quarters combat on the high seas on a fancy yacht; and 'Express,' a fight at the Los Angeles terminal of the California High-Speed Rail – which is finished in Treyarch's 2025 – featuring moving, bullet trains that will kill you if you get in their way.

We've seen and heard a lot from Treyarch regarding its next Call of Duty installment, but the only thing left for us to do is review the final product. There's certainly a passion and dedication from that team to take the series in a fresh direction and from what we've seen Black Ops 2 is the most ambitious Call of Duty ever assembled.

Now we wait to find out if it's the best.

Glad to hear about the changes to Prestige. I always felt that the whole re-grinding thing was such a pain in the ass and pretty dumb in the end.

Re: Call of Duty Game Thread

It's the looseness of the gameplay versus how tight the IW games are for me. Controls seems to respond tighter for me in the IW games than they did the TreyArch ones.

http://ca.ign.com/articles/2012/10/26/black-ops-2-multiplayer-matchmaking-explained

The multiplayer matchmaking system in Call of Duty: Black Ops II will work using latency and ping, Treyarch has confirmed.

In a series of tweets, game design director David Vondehaar explained that the upcoming entry in the Call of Duty series wouldn't rely on region-based matchmaking, as was the case in previous games.

In response to being asked whether the locale-preference in matchmaking would again appear in Black Ops II, the following exchange took place:

Vondehaar-610x558.png

In theory, this should result in fewer instances of host migration and drop outs, which have frustrated Call of Duty players in previous instalments. This isn't the only good news we've had for Call of Duty multiplayer fans recently; earlier this month Treyarch announced that the Call of Duty Elite service would be free to Black Ops II players.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II is due to release on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on November 13, and on the Wii U on its respective launch dates.

1. Good job renaming the thread title. All of these games blend together, even if I still prefer COD over everything else.

2. I'm still wondering if I should pre-order BO2 because I'm actually geared for it.

So I've never played a Call of Duty game. I saw a commercial for Black Ops 2 and considered getting it to play online.
Or should I get one of the older ones and play it online?
Either way I'm probably going to get killed, a bunch.

My friend suggested I play them all for the single player. Thoughts?

I posted that in the Microsoft prattle thread. I was told to pick up CoD 4 and see how I liked it. Seems like a solid suggestion but I wanted to see everyone else's thoughts that is well versed in these games.

COD4 is the basis for all modern FPS, basically. If you enjoy that then you'll enjoy MW2, BO, MW3, and BO2 to varying degrees. COD4 is also pretty cheap by now.

Your friend suggesting you get them just for the single player, though, is a tool. COD4 and MW2 have decent single player campaigns, but the multiplayer is why these games are as big as they are.

Yeah but I don't ever play multiplayer games, I love games for the story.
However, I'm thinking of branching out and trying multiplayer. Would I be able to pick it up with Black Ops 2 and just go from there and work on getting better? I guess I'm wondering if there's stuff from the earlier games I should learn in multiplayer to keep me from just constantly getting slaughtered and not having any fun. Or would it be like that in all of them until I just get better?

And I didn't know if the single player story was good enough to want to play them all.

World at War and the Black Ops series are connected right?

I was never someone who played any FPS games online, but COD got me hooked on it. There tends to be some sort of experience system online, so that basically doing anything will get you some experience; this allows you to unlock better guns and whatnot; so even if you're getting slaughtered and only getting 2-3 kills a match for a bit, you can still be progressing. And once you get to the point of "oh, just two more kills and I can unlock this new gun", it can get kinda addictive.

And I don't think there'd be much to be gained from playing other COD games on multiplayer first; I always found the biggest advantage is actually just knowing the layout of a map, where people will spawn, where people tend to be, that kind of thing.

Awesome, so I should just get Black Ops II and go nuts online.
I guess I could play the old ones for first player if I really wanted since I am big on story, but I was told the story of those wasn't just blow you away awesome.

I think I might just try to find World at War and Black Ops. I think those stories may appeal to me more and is the zombies mode really that fun to play online?

Not sure about the others but both Black Ops games have training modes where you can face ai controlled bots in multi player mode. I think BO2 has the option to adjust their difficulty as well.

So I'm getting Ops 2 for free since my friend is giving me the copy he's getting from the manager's conference he went to and he's already getting the "care package" edition. Dub needs to get his ass on to Xbox so I can snipe him..

Well FWIW, BO2 is a pretty nice departure from the standard COD fare.

It looks fairly decent. Is the gameplay tighter, overall, than the first BO? Is Zombie mode there to begin with or does it need to be unlocked somehow?

The commercial shows Robert Downey Jr in a jet and some chick on a horse and some dude with robots firing for him. Is any of that in multiplayer?

Yeah, seriously. FPS Russia is a little more than just "some dude."

AA-12 Fully Automatic Shotgun!!!

EDIT: For the record, Dama, this gun is featured in both MW2 and MW3, but it's flawed heavily. The fire rate in the game is about double what it actually is and the recoil is ridiculous compared to its real-world counterpart.

Have you played it yet, Corey? I have my copy but I need to wait til work is over with. It's been getting some pretty favourable reviews from what I've read.

EDIT: Apparently Michael Rooker plays a character in the campaign mode. :D
