Just finished Zombie Driver.
Story was sort of interesting, although it was only ever explained in tiny tidbits mid-mission (whenever you pick up a survivor they say something, and these two or three-sentence blurbs are all you get for story). Gameplay was alright. Difficulty ramping up was acceptable, I never felt like "This is too easy, I am clearly dominating" but I also never felt like "holy shit this game got hard".
At the end of it all, though, I couldn't help but be a bit...annoyed, underwhelmed, some mix of the two. There's no minimap from what I can see, so the majority of my failed missions consisted of me getting destroyed due to being unable to find where the fuck I was supposed to go & thereby exposing myself to needless damage from zombies.
This wouldn't be as bad if missions didn't involve timers (some are outright timed, but you only have a certain length of time to save survivors from the hordes), but seeing as they do, wasting time trying to figure out where the one connecting bridge from Island A to Island B is just infuriated me time & again because I'm a bad navigator. Granted, there are plenty of between-buildings shortcuts as well, but when you can't find where you're going via the roadways, cutting between skyscrapers isn't very helpful.
(EDIT: This brings me to another issue, the camera. It made me nauseous once or twice when I was swinging around in circles repeatedly, and it cost me a mission a couple times when I would inadvertently drive into a pack of zombies & get killed or mistakenly think I could squeeze through a shortcut and the time it took to reverse out and get going again made me run out of time at the end), so I can't give it a positive grade. On a 1-10 scale it swings between a passable 7 and a "OMG FUCKING CAMERA, now I have to pick up 10 survivors all over again because you didn't show me that pack of zombies until I drove into it" 0.)
Another issue I had was with vehicle variety. Sure, the game has a handful of choices, but you'll only use about 4 of them (the best car in the game you get at the end, the massive-capacity vehicle you get near the midway point, the first vehicle you unlock & any one of the other half-dozen vehicles you can unlock when neither of the first three are either available or applicable). This makes the rest seem like a waste, as they stay un-upgraded & therefore useless in comparison.
I would've rather seen more weapon & zombie variety. There are 5 weapons, 2 of which are very situation-specific (the nitro for boosting speed to either make a critical timed point or plow through a group, and the flamethrower that doesn't appear to do anything as I would kill whatever was in front of me by driving over it before the flames would kill it), and 5 zombie types with only 2 mattering because once you start upgrading you just mow through the other 3 groups without slowing down or taking damage.
I had an enjoyable few hours with it, but there doesn't seem to be replay value as I've no desire to play it again. Would've been worth buying on sale if it hadn't been on the pirate bay, methinks.
