Eight wins in a row for the Red Sox. In spite of everything, maybe they are actually pretty good? Still got a lot of season but at least it seems like they are having a lot more fun than last season.

The hitting's definitely holding up and this is with Adam Duvall out (who I think is tailor-made for the Green Monster).

The pitching will be the dicey area IMO. If their starters can get through 6 innings and give up 2-4 ER, I think the Red Sox have a chance to win most of those games.

Oakland As haven’t lost since their TV PBP guy accidentally said the N word and are no longer in sole possession of worst record in the MLB!

I think the pitching has improved since the starters have realized they don’t have to worry about lack of run support most nights.

The A's and Royal's get all the attention, but The St. Louis Cardinals are on a 8 game losing streak and have a record of 10-24 despite most pre season projections having them as the best team in the NL Central. They also moved their catcher Willson Contreras who cost 87 million to a DH/Outfield role which has to sting.

They could still pull it together, but it's a huge shock to me. The NL Central is pretty wide open as the Pirates are failing back to earth.

They really fell apart by 1994 (they were still winning 83-86 games a year until 1993) when teams started emphasizing power over speed/baserunning and fields became more grass rather than astroturf. Even the Cardinals admitted defeat at the end of 1994 and had installed grass at Busch Stadium ahead of the '96 season (as well as moving the fences in by 10 feet and lowering the walls by 2.5 feet to 8 feet).

The '95 Cardinals had 3 players hit more than 6 HR (Gilkey at 17, Lankford at 25, and Brian Jordan at 22). They were 1 of only 3 teams to hit fewer than 116 HR on the year alongside Houston (109 still playing in the notoriously tough Astrodome) and the Phillies (94 playing at Veterans Stadium).

The whole thing worked when they had Jack Clark hitting 20-30 HRs a season. By 1991 Todd Zeile was their team leader with 11.

I think 1996 might be Tony La Russa's best year as a manager. A team that finished last in runs scored the year before came one win away from the World Series.

Interesting/random sports facts thread crosspost.

With today’s win against Cleveland, the Detroit Tigers are 15-5 against teams not from the AL East but 2-14 against AL East teams.

My guess is Orlando is big enough to support a baseball team but only a domed stadium is feasible and only an MLB stadium is big enough to justify that. To me it only works if the Rays move to Orlando. But I do think it's a shame that Orlando does not have an affiliated team at all.

My periodic A's update. Third worst in runs allowed through 38 games in modern history. Worst run differential in modern history and it's not close.

I think the issue with Orlando having a minor league team is that the Rays’ Triple A affiliate is one of the most iconic minor league teams, Atlanta’s team is in the suburbs of Atlanta (…like the Braves themselves now) and no other team makes sense geographically.

Then again, the Dodgers Triple A affiliate is in Oklahoma City. I think Orlando has had the same problem that Las Vegas has had. 1. HOT (and retractable roofs are not an option at minor league level) and 2. There are so many entertainment options around, who is going to want to go see minor league baseball?

Orlando had a AA team for a long time (and they were a Florida State League team before that). They ended up at ESPN's Wide World of Sports complex which is nice...but a full twenty miles outside downtown Orlando. Previously they played at Tinker Field which has now been overrun by the Citrus Bowl.

It seems to me that Orlando is too big of a city for a AA team but I would have said the same thing about Hartford five years ago and the Yard Goats are one of the most successful franchises in the minors.

I think what’s key is ballpark experience, especially in these huge cities with lots of other stuff going on.

On the other hand, Citi Field is awesome and you can get tickets for most games for less than $10.

Minor league cities are weird sometimes. In terms of metropolitan areas, Orlando ranks just ahead of San Antonio (Double A), Portland (Low A) and Sacramento (Triple A). But Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is the 100th most populous metropolis and we have Triple A baseball.

A third of the markets in the International League are really just three small cities in an overcoat.

The Pirates are 1-8 so far in May, 13 runs scored to 51 allowed. Still clinging to first place but they are crashing hard.

I saw yesterday that the NL Central had won something like 14 out of their last 50 games collectively. It is definitely gonna be a matter of not losing the division Vs winning it at this rate.

Did anybody see the highlights of the Jays/Braves game from today? The Braves defense was just BRUTAL. They ought to show those highlights to the Benny Hill theme.

The Jays swept the series but they got a lot of help from Atlanta’s D today.

I forget which poster Nick was at TSM.

Fun Orioles stat. Adley Rutschman made his MLB debut May 21, 2022. Yesterday the Orioles played their 162nd game since. The Orioles are 93-69 since Rutschman's debut. I think it's fairly clear Rutschman is the best catcher in the American League already.
