Never forget that Hammer was released from WCW after complaining that his name was Major Stash in the Misfits in Action, not because it was a lame weed reference, but the fact that his "rank" was the lowest in the group.

Oh God I'm embarrassed that I know this much WCW minutiae but Private Stash was the name that he complained about and he got upgraded to Major Stash, which still kind of makes sense but is less funny than Private Stash already is. He got released cause WCW was tanking and you didn't really need that many MIA members.

Its a little odd for a guy to get 2 or 3 runs (from 91-99ish) and never really change gimmicks. Considering he didn't get terribly over as the rocker in 91/92 yet in 93 when he works Sid at Slamboree (and was legit hurt IIRC by the powerbomb(?)) he's in a black singlet but still head banging, Then he comes back again and is still just the rocker type gimmick until the MIA gimmick modified him somewhat.

He was definitely given a hard push in 91 at first, at least among the mid-carders. He was able to feud with Foley, etc.

He had a couple of gimmick changes but they all really just amounted to “Van Hammer but he has a mesh shirt so now he is goth and in Raven’s Flock. Oh wait now he is wearing round sunglasses and tie dye so he is a hippie.” After the initial run in ‘91-‘92, he seemed very much in keep getting them checks mode.

How did anyone see anything in him, though? He was stupid looking and never fit any gimmick he had, save maybe the Flock but he shouldn't have been around to be in the Flock anyway. He's literally everything Ice Train wasn't.

Dusty apparently thought he could be the next Ultimate Warrior but he really only had so much power after ‘93 or so. His presence beyond that is that WCW was a gravy train that was hard to get off once you were on there if you wanted to just stay on there and hang out for the ride.

Legit blanked on the Hammer in the Flock as Brody Wrestling Dementia continues to rear it's head. But yeah he was pretty much the same look minus hanging out with the Emo crowd.

He also had a hippie look and a camouflage look! Also I feel like even during the metal gimmick, he went through a Richie Sambora urban cowboy phase.

I’m as Dusty would say flubbergasted. Where/when is this from? Dusty and Lee Marshall calling a Hacksaw-Stevie Ray match from the Nitro set (but with a TBS chyron)?

Podcast crosspost! 83 weeks covered the July 1st 96 Nitro.
>Tony Schiavone discussed Greg Valentine possibly being the 3rd man on commentary. Eric said 1996 Valentine would have worked in an "enforcer role"
> Conrad annoyed me by mocking the Horsemen facing the RnR Express/Renegade/Gomez as not being on par with vintage NWO Nitro line ups as if 97 and 98 weren't loaded with matches like Prince Iaukea vs Hugh Morris and Disorderly Conduct getting smashed by Public Enemy or somesuch.
> Conrad admits he didn't watch wrestling at all when Razor and Diesel were in the WWF, if that helps pin down his topic choices.
> The merits of Scotty Riggs good looks earning him a bigger push is discussed. Tom Zenk is the comparison. I do recall being "upset" when Scott Studd showed up in WCW instead of the WWF since I was pulling for Vince and knew Studd was from the USWA pipeline.

IIRC Hogan only ran into Reis as the Yet-tay at HHavoc 95, MAYBE in the WW3 battle royal, and the Nitro where the WCW A-team were all in Japan and only Macho Man was on the card. (Possibly the same night as JR cutting the promo on Vince and debuting Fake Razor???) Hogan (IIRC) confronted Ron Reis about how to attack Duggan in their match or something like that, but then attacked Reis himself instead.
--
On the flipside, if Hogan doesn't go heel, Reis and Roadblock are both prime candidates to be TV cannon fodder for Hogan to smash.

This brings up an interesting point that the Nitro lineups were much weaker after they switched to two hours. You suddenly had main events like The Giant vs Greg Valentine and Luger vs Big Bubba. Hogan didn't wrestle on Nitro for the entire second half of '96, then Sting stopped wrestling and then Savage was out and then Flair got hurt. The shows were full of matches that lacked marquee value and yet this is the point where Nitro pulled far ahead of Raw. Just goes to show how hard the nWo angle was carrying them.

It's almost like the build to the big matches and the personalities involved are more important than the weekly bell-to-bell, or something...

I don’t remember them promoting his cameo in The Waterboy either which was a box office hit. I honestly cannot remember whether or not JATW was a hit or flop at the time but it was still a movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger who was still one of the top 10 if not top 5 box office draws at that point.

Didn't they barely promote Goldberg's photo shoot with Mark McGwire at the height of both of their populatities? Big Mac probably would've appeared on Nitro if they asked. They were always way behind WWF at promoting things like that.

Bobby Heenan said the moment he lost faith in WCW is when he pitched a segment based around the fact that Mark McGwire rubbed his bat on Goldberg's chest early in the season where he broke the single season HR record and got quickly dismissed.

You can blame WWE for being out of touch but they would never be that willfully ignorant. WCW seemed to base their pop culture crossovers on whether or not it was something Bischoff was personally interested in. Anyone of us can imagine Easy E being like "UGH! I DON'T CARE! BASEBALL IS BORING!"
