No one (outside of maybe Brian Knobbs) wanted to do it and no one was clamoring for WCW to have a hardcore vision and the people who love that style of wrestling aren't going to switch over from WWF or ECW. It's just an underrated factor of WCW's demise. I'm not going to argue it was a major reason but the Hardcore Division is the type of thing that kind of explained why they fell apart.

No promotion tried harder and failed harder at being cool than 1999 WCW. Some people would say TV PG/modern WWE but at least modern WWE occasionally has a shred of self awareness. '99 WCW has strong "Dad trying to fit in too hard at child's birthday party" energy.

The Junkyard Battle Royal is a strong strong contender for worst WCW match of all time. It was horrible, didn't look cool, didn't put anyone over, and a bunch of people got legitimately hurt.

It did pave the way for Zona 23 though, I guess.

Junkyard was a match I went into thinking there was no way it could be as bad as people said. I had the same feeling about the Doomsday Cage. Open minds just aren't meant to be where the big boys play.

Junkyard Battle Royal and the triple threat match at New Blood Rising are two famously bad WCW moments that are exactly as bad as it's hyped up to be (if not worse).

At least the NBR has an unintentional comedy factor. There's nothing funny about a bunch of dudes hurting themselves in a darkened junkyard, people!

I feel like that Saturn-Jericho feud could've been fun/cool if it happened anywhere other than '99 WCW. Did I mention how much I hate '99 WCW? As crazy as it sounds, I probably hate '99 WWF almost as much. And I only say almost as much cause at least crowds and some of the performers seem into what's going on.

1999 was, arguably, a pretty weak year for ECW as well. The second half at least with the TNN show starting up even though they were growing in mainstream popularity.

Taz really should have won the ECW title earlier but I understand they wanted him to dethrone Douglas, who was injured for a portion of '98.

Saturn and Jericho a year earlier would've probably worked really well. Good crossover potential with Raven/Benoit/DDP too.

They should've called an audible in ECW and given the belt to RVD. RVD/Taz would draw and RVD was white hot.

Saturn/Jericho started in late 1998.

RVD didn't need the ECW World title, and I'd argue that 1999 was one of the company's best years overall. Better than 2000, that's for damn sure.

Hell, take Corino out of the company and most of 2000 is barely watchable.

RVD should've gotten it just for appearances. You get the big TV deal you go all in with your most over guy. People see world titles different from TV titles.

Saturn and Jericho should've replaced the Konnan feud at least. Make Starrcade a little better.

Has Bischoff gone into how he drove Blitzkrieg out of the business yet?

He shat on Kidman/Blitzkrieg when him and Conrad recapped Spring Stampede '99 a few months back and said he had no idea what he was up to.

Given how frazzled and overwhelmed it sounds like Bischoff was in '99, I'd be shocked if him and Blitzkrieg had more than passing conversations.

Poor late '90s Bobby Eaton. He just seemed instantly irrelevant after he left (or was he kicked out of?) the Blue Bloods. SMW was gone so he couldn't go there. He'd be a square peg in a round hole in ECW. What else was he going to do besides this? Go to WWF and be part of the New Midnight Express with Bart Gunn (sorry Bob Holly but you are #2 Alabmian named Bob in wrestling)?

All he would've fit in was Memphis by that point, for better or worse. Why they didn't make him just an oversized cruiserweight and get matches with Malenko or Rey on the weekend shows I don't know. At least a better spot wiith better workers.

Eaton never exactly had the presence of a superstar, it was how good he was. Weekend guy with random matches was the best unless you put him in a tag team with a mouthpiece. What I'm saying is Sonny Ono should've hired him and we'd get Ultimo Express.

It is interesting that Eaton went from a headline spot in the Dangerous Alliance in 92 and then by early 93 was cannon fodder and teaming with the nationally unknown Benoît.

I wonder if it had anything to do with Dusty's influence, or lack there of. Rhodes was definitely a backer.

Eaton going from reluctant Anglophile to reluctant weeb woulda been the ticket, you're right.

Ultimo Express could have had a feud with the Armstrong Family over Bobby Eaton turning his back on ALABAMA MEN

Eaton could have worked in ECW as a heel. All he had to do was be a southern technical wrestler refusing to do any hardcore moves or use weapons. Just arm drags, dropkicks, and chain wrestling. Give him a manager talking about Bobby being a true wrestler and there you go. Crowd would have hated him.

I mean it's not like there were a bunch of southern guys in a group called the FBI. Eaton could work there. Or Raven's flock with Raven giving him an awkward grunge makeover.
