Call him a c*** show host ... TMZ has learned, Johnny Carson recorded a sex tape with his wife back in the 1970s -- and not only has the tape just hit the market ... very solid sources tell TMZ, Johnny's johnny is ENORMOUS.

Multiple sources tell us, the tape owner approached the Carson estate in September to make a deal for the footage -- the estate said take a hike, and threatened to sue the owner if he ever sold it.

But the owner's apparently gone rogue -- we're told he's now shopping it to private collectors ... and it is legendary.

According to sources who've seen it, the tape was shot right after he married wife #3 Joanna Holland. It opens with a naked dark-haired Carson masturbating by a pool -- then shows Joanna (with a bouffant hairdo) going all Linda Lovelace.

It goes on for about 5 minutes -- then we're told it cuts to a 20-minute sex scene in Johnny's bedroom ... and Johnny does NOT hold back.

Oh yeah, we're also told he's hung like a horse -- seriously, porn star status. One source said it was at least 10 inches.

He also had the cast of Total Divas on the night after Prince was on.

It's weird that Arsenio barely changed anything about the show. The band is completely different, the set is slightly different and there's a bit less emphasis on The Dog Pound but everything is pretty much the same. It's bizarre. It's like your dead grandmother coming back to life twenty years later. I'm shocked it got renewed for a second year.

'90s nostalgia is in.

I think the reason why Arsenio works now is the same reason he worked in the late '80s/early '90s. He brings on guests that the other late night shows don't really have. Black people mostly. I mean it's certainly gotten better than the days of Johnny Carson by a signifcant margin but I feel like if you give Fallon or Kimmel, a choice between having a moderately popular rock band or a moderately popular hip hop act on, they're going to go with the former 9 times out of 10.

It's for the best. His heart clearly hasn't been in it for years, and he regularly looks like he doesn't want to be there.

Really can't see Ferguson taking the spot so will be interesting to see who they target.
I think Ferguson has stated in the past that he will retire from Late Night once Dave retires.

Maybe Conan O'Brien? His contract with TBS ends in November 2015. Moving back to New York City and into the Ed Sullivan Theater would do wonders for him. Although CBS may want an LA Late Show since the Tonight Show is now in New York.

there are rumblings that CBS is going to go after Chelsea Handler to replace Letterman. I sure as fuck hope that isn't true

Even if Ferguson doesn't retire, he has stated he doesn't want 11:30. He doesn't want to be part of the Late Night bullshit, he hates it. Craig has always been happy at 12:30, he just wishes he had a band.

All I know is that there's been (unfounded IMO) speculation that Jon Stewart will replace Letterman.

Letterman from 82-95 was just awesome stuff. Best talk show ever.
Letterman from 96-00 was okay, but you could tell he wasn't quite at his peak anymore.
Letterman from 00-05 was pretty dull and complacent, didn't have the energy, creativity or edge anymore.
Letterman from 05-current is just someone who either has totally lost it or just doesn't give a fuck anymore.

I used to love the stuff he would do on the street. But, he rarely,if ever, leaves the studio anymore.

I think part of it is the heart attack. I think it may have made him a better (less cynical) person, but it also kinda killed the vibe of the show. And, I'm sure age and doing the show for 30 years led to that decline as well.

And the thing is I didn't even see his best years live (as I was born in 86). I've seen a lot of it via youtube, and a DVD collection I bought. Comedy usually doesn't age well. But, Letterman was that good for over a decade.

Letterman from like 1986 till 1995 is phenomenal. No one can touch that reign of greatness. Best ever

I'm not a Chelsea Handler fan, but I think I'd enjoy someone who's not a white male in the role.

They used to show Late Nite (and his brief morning show) replays on cable when I was a kid (don't recall the channel) and that got me hooked on Letterman in the early 90's. Only caught the tail end of Late Nite on NBC, but was a religious fan of the Late Show for most of the 90's

I think he's the best Late Night host ever, and I find him hilarious and fascinating in general. His interviews on Howard Stern are worth seeking out if you've never heard them. Also 'Evil David Letterman' clips if you've never heard those, lol

I haven't watched his show regularly in years, but I'll randomly watch interviews he does with guests that I'm interested in, and he's still got it

It must have been summer of 1987 or 88 and I was staying up to watch Letterman and there was a bit about Paul and Dave beating up Amish people or something and I can remember laughing so hard that I woke up my parents and got yelled at pretty bad. I was so young at the time but he still appealed to me even if I didn't get all the references.

that's pretty much my first memory of him

more on Chelsea Handler rumors:

411:

The Wrap has a report that states that E! talk show host Chelsea Handler, according to sources, was in in negotiations with CBS to do a late night show and would possibly replace Craig Ferguson in the 12:30AM slot. This was before David Letterman announced that he would be retiring from The Late Show in 2015, and now Handler is rumored to be eyeing Letterman's spot.

Handler was said to be contacted following her announcement that she would finish up her E! contract at the end of the year with the option for a syndicated show or the 12:30AM nightly slot. According to the report, with Letterman stepping down, she might try to take over Letterman's slot. Handler will reportedly be meeting with CBS CEO and chairman Les Moonves in order to discuss the options soon.

The report also indicates that handler has a number of possibilities on her plate and is looking at offers from Sirius, CNN, and Netflix. In order to get the Letterman slot, she would have to convince CBS that she can gain a more mainstream audience than the one she has on E!

In addition, Craig Ferguson apparently has the right to first refusal to take Letterman's slot. However, there is no guarantee that CBS wants to offer him the gig because The Late, Late Show has not done very well against its competition in the 12:30 slot, including Seth Meyers' recent replacement of Fallon as the host of NBC's Late Night.

Wait, they were firing Craig?!?
Again, Craig has said he wants his show to end when Letterman's ends. Besides, there's no way his schikt would work for the 11:30 crowd.

Yeah, but the story said before they even knew Dave was retiring, they were looking. So either Craig was retiring or CBS was firing him. Either way, looks like I'm done with late night television soon.
