The Wrap has a report that states that E! talk show host Chelsea Handler, according to sources, was in in negotiations with CBS to do a late night show and would possibly replace Craig Ferguson in the 12:30AM slot. This was before David Letterman announced that he would be retiring from The Late Show in 2015, and now Handler is rumored to be eyeing Letterman's spot.
Handler was said to be contacted following her announcement that she would finish up her E! contract at the end of the year with the option for a syndicated show or the 12:30AM nightly slot. According to the report, with Letterman stepping down, she might try to take over Letterman's slot. Handler will reportedly be meeting with CBS CEO and chairman Les Moonves in order to discuss the options soon.
The report also indicates that handler has a number of possibilities on her plate and is looking at offers from Sirius, CNN, and Netflix. In order to get the Letterman slot, she would have to convince CBS that she can gain a more mainstream audience than the one she has on E!
In addition, Craig Ferguson apparently has the right to first refusal to take Letterman's slot. However, there is no guarantee that CBS wants to offer him the gig because The Late, Late Show has not done very well against its competition in the 12:30 slot, including Seth Meyers' recent replacement of Fallon as the host of NBC's Late Night.
