Yeah, you can renew for one year for $40, after which subsequent years are $60. Unless you do what I do and buy cards cheap online, so you're paid for up to 3 years in advance.

Some $40-ish 12-month card options, which avoid giving Microsoft your credit card info, since they make it such a pain in the balls to un-give it to them:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Xbox-12-Month-Gold-Card/11070919
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16874103129
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Month-Live-Gold-Card/dp/B0029LJIFG/
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=a2841849

You can stack up to 3 years, I believe, and the cards shouldn't expire. If you wanna get ahead of the game, or something. I won't, because I don't have Gold, and I don't really need it.

Just picked up Fable 2 at a rummage sale for $3. Haven't started it up yet. But, I am excited for an epic game.

I got sucked into Plants vs. Zombies. I don't even like tower defense games...but this is addicting as all hell.

I was a little sad they didn't make Sonic Adventure XBLA a true 16:9 HD game, but I guess that would have been a lot of work. I was happy to see the Japanese language option intact. I also forgot just how fast / far ahead of the camera Sonic runs.

Also, am I understanding this correctly - they made a King of the Fighters overhead shooter? Ok then.

I just renewed for $30 through the Console, the whole 12 months + Avatar helmet thing. You'll never find a better deal, IMO.

No.

They made two.

I didn't know that this week Sonic Adventure was coming out due to the dashboard being hijacked by Halo: Reach. I didn't think the graphics would age that badly but maybe whoever ported did a really bad job. I hope Shenmue gets release on XBLA because I would buy that.

Downloading it now. $10 is totally worth it, though I think it is lame you have to pay another $5 if you want to 'upgrade' to the DX version. If that includes the gamegear games that were unlockable on Sonic Adventure DX then it's worth it but if it's just 60 missions and Metal Sonic unlockable then I'll pass.

Tails' theme is way more catchier and has been listened to way more times than I'd like to admit. Ditto Sonic's, but at least that one is more admittable as it is not sung by a woman or have deep rooted implications of gay hero worship.

Having play for an hour or two last night I'm happy with the port. Sure it's lame to charge $5 more for metal sonic and the stupid missions (catch the balloon!) but its not like there's anything essential in that package so you pay $10 for a good game and everyone is happy. It is going to take me awhile to get used to playing it with the stupid bars on the side though.

Glad I'm not the only one who likes Tails' theme.

Of course they ruined it in Sonic Adventure 2.

The music for the Knuckles levels is also a LOT more tolerable in 1 than 2.

I'd jump on this, but it comes attached to buying a year further down the road at full price, which would average out $45 a year. Unless you REALLY like that Halo avatar item, I'd go with the prepaid cards suggested above.

Before your sub ends, just switch the renewal option to monthly and then add on a prepaid card and the prepaid card becomes your next subscription.

It does not come attached to buying another year.

The Canadian option is for $36 plus tax, which has me a little tempted, and the free Gold weekend is prodding me a little more, even though I really don't need a Gold account.

GOG.com (Good Old Games)--a DRM-free digital download service, primarily for older PC games--appears to have shut down.

http://www.gog.com/

Dear GOG users,

We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is. We've debated on it for quite some time and, unfortunately, we've decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form.

We're very grateful for all support we've received from all of you in the past two years. Working on GOG.com was a great adventure for all of us and an unforgettable journey to the past, through the long and wonderful history of PC gaming.

This doesn't mean the idea behind GOG.com is gone forever. We're closing down the service and putting this era behind us as new challenges await.

On a technical note, this week we'll put in place a solution to allow everyone to re-download their games. Stay tuned to this page and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates.

All the best,
GOG.com Team

Rumor running around that it's a publicity stunt to announce them coming out of beta & unveiling a Steam-like client.

EDIT: Other rumors say they've been bought, one says Atari, one says Steam.

I think I might be in the market for a new wireless adapter for my 360, and I would really like to avoid having to pay $70 or whatever for the official Xbox 360 wireless adapter. Can anyone suggest a cheaper alternative that would work for me?

Not sure if it matters, but I'm now using AT&T U-verse for my Internet service.

Here's one on Amazon for $12.99 with mostly favorable reviews. Is it any good, and is it 360-compatible?

I was under the impression that you pretty much had to use the official Microsoft one, but maybe I just got that impression from Microsoft.

From what i remember there is only a handful of 360 compatible wireless adapters. Msoft were smart with their console not allowing much 3rd party.

I don't think the 360 has drivers for anything but the official MS WiFi adapter. Except maybe for an older original Xbox adapter. After my ethernet port got fried, I tried using a USB-to-ethernet adapter, but that didn't work for me.

You could try setting up a wireless bridge, which may be a little cheaper, and would probably let you use it for more than just the 360. Though that'd be more work.

You could check Craigslist and the like for a used one. I got mine for $40 a little under a year ago. That was before the new console with the WiFi built-in, which is likely to have brought down demand some.

I had been using the old adapter that was made for the original Xbox. I had some trouble with that one at first two, but a buddy downloaded some sort of driver for it, and it worked for a while. I think it has finally crapped the bed - I've noticed it runs really hot, so I'm not too surprised that it eventually died after about 2 1/2 years of use.

Thanks for all the feedback on here.

Try Ebay. I just looked on there to see how much the Netword Adaptors were going for and I saw quite a few going for about $40.00.

So, Sonic players, what's your preferred method of playing? I've been playing the XBLA version the same way I played the Dreamcast version a decade ago; I play as Sonic until I unlock Tails and Knuckles, then I try and even up everyone's story progress by switching at major points. Right now I have Sonic, Tails, and Amy up to the Egg Carrier with Knuckles almost there. I can't remember where Gamma starts out but I figure he's already up there, so I guess I need to play as Big (ugh) now.

My usual method (and this time is no exception) is to start with Sonic and switch to each character as soon as they are unlocked. I just finished Amy's story and am Gamma's right now, dreading the moment I unlock Big.

What's new this time is I'm also going back to trial mode and unlocking the emblems as I go along. I'm a stage or two behind at the moment on that, but with the exception of I think one Amy level and one Gamma level I've got all 3 emblems for every stage available at the moment.

Not sure WHY I'm doing this since getting all emblems gets you nothing since Metal Sonic is DLC, but whatever. I just like the fact that I CAN get all the emblems, unlike Sonic Adventure 2.

And on that note, it's amazing to me how they took the perfectly acceptable Knuckles levels in SA1 and just made them worse in EVERY conceivable way in SA2. They made the stages bigger, which in most cases would be a good thing but not in a fucking find the emerald level. They made the radar worse by making you find three pieces in order as opposed to SA1 where all three can light up the radar at any one time. They made the music MUCH worse, and it's amplified by how long the fucking stages take. Even if the SA1 Knuckles levels took me 10-15 minutes sometimes to finish I wouldn't be annoyed by the music from any of the stages. In SA2 after 10 minutes of music from any of his levels I'm looking for the mute button. Wait no, after 3 minutes the mute button, 10 minutes a rope to hang myself. If you hate the Knuckles stages in SA1 there are only 4 or 5 of them. In SA2 they double up with Rouge, who has slightly better music and that's about it.

And of course they made getting all the emblems for these stages a zillion times harder as well. Besides the needing an A ranking bullshit in SA2, finding all the pieces in a certain time is fucking impossible for me. In SA1 you go find a piece, then die and its still where it was, then go get it and now you're saved with that piece at X time. In SA2 the piece locations reset when you die. AHHHHHHHHH.

Amazing how much they shit the bed with those levels. But back to SA1 on XBLA, besides the lack of widescreen I'm really happy with the port. Looks great on my TV and sounds great too.
