It’s insane to think they signed Pujols for $240 million (not that it wasn’t going to be a bad deal late), and have Trout and Ohtani and they essentially have nothing to show for it the last 15 years.

For a long time I would've been bitter about this and, out of jealousy, mad at the Dodgers. But I'm not so much like that anymore. I'm happy for any team and their fanbase that genuinely tries to win championships.

It's a very interesting contract. So much depends on whether or how long he can pitch and hit. As a hitter he's one of the best in the league but it's not like he's like Barry Bonds on roids level good. He's had multiple years with an OPS under .900. He's also going to be 30 in July, and as a Reds fan I've seen firsthand what paying someone in their 30s for shit they did in their 20s can look like. No one knows how he will age. Maybe he breaks the mold and is good for the duration, or maybe he falls off a cliff due to injuries or loss of bat speed or any other number of age related issues that cause decline.

I'm very skeptical on him continuing as both a hitter and pitcher for much longer. I just don't see it in his mid-30s, especially coming off 2 arm surgeries already.

As a pure hitter he's great. But, he's basically been Freddie Freeman level. And you aren't paying anything close to 700 million for Freddie.

Below are their career numbers:

Freeman: .301/.388/.514 OPS: .902
Ohtani: .274/.366/.556 OPS: .922

The Dodgers owe their fans for how much they overcharge them to go to games. That's part of why they have to deliver signings like that one. He won't be the last I'm sure.

I need to save a reminder to myself next year to not get excited for Juan Soto. Dodgers will probably put up a half assed offer, and still end up with him despite Ohtani playing DH. And if they don't, a New York team will.

I do wonder if the Dodgers fail in the playoffs, if Dave Roberts keeps his job another year. I'll watch some Dodgers playoff baseball every year and notice he still makes a lot of the same errors he made in the 2016 NLCS against The Cubs. Feels like he should get some of the blame for the Dodgers only having 1 championship with the amount of talent they've had every year since 2016 or so.

Edit: I can't hide how bitter this post is. But my dream was to have one of Ohtani, Soto, or Yamamoto, and there's a better chance of all three playing for the Dodgers at the same time, than the Cubs to land a single star in a trade or free agent on the level of those three. I know Yamamoto is unproven, but he seems like a sure thing imo. Anyways, Fuckin Dodgers.

Well, sure and there is the possibility that the the Dodgers just paid $700 million for a DH/closer.
And if he's a great hitter/closer, it's a good deal. These teams are all making a lot more money than even Ohtani. Why would we want some owner, who almost certainly inherited most or all of their money to begin with, to get even more instead of the players we actually pay to watch and who are, you know, the only ones whose efforts might actually bring championship celebrations to us fans?

If Ohtani stops pitching I think it’s quite likely that he becomes at least a decent outfielder. Between the hitting and pitching it’s overlooked that Ohtani also stole twenty bases. He’s not a typical DH. He’s athletic.

Just guessing here, but they might've made him a good offer but I don't think any team was going to top 700. Dodgers might not give him the better chance in October but they'll be in the mix, better because of him, and you can't turn down that much money. It's like the great Sabathia in 2008. Milwaukee had a competitive offer but New York's was just too much greater.

People who think he did this for goodness sake are nuts and I’ve seen this sentiment too but he’s also deferring that much money until he’s no longer living in California and won’t have to pay the taxes. This is smart shrewd move.

Edit: he made this offer to all teams but I don’t believe he ever meant to leave the state of California.

I love it. MLB needs a new villain. Ever since George Steinbrenner died the evil empire hasn't been quite as evil.

Good for the Dodgers. So many cheapskate owners in the league, especially Hal Steinbrenner. Dude is a fucking disgrace. Penny pinching when you're that rich and the franchise is that profitable (worth 7 billion and 657 million in gross revenue). And he couldn't even muster up an extra 25 million? Fucking disgrace.

I don’t mind the Dodgers spending that much, it is the fact that teams like this exist in the same league as fuck faces Jeff Fisher and Jerry Reinsdorf.

There are cheap owners in the NFL and NBA (including Jerry Reinsdorf himself oddly) but disparity between big spenders and poverty franchises doesn’t seem nearly as bad.
