I finally played the Madden 12 demo today. It sucks that they've made all these upgrades to franchise mode because the in-game play fucking sucks. I've only bought 2 of the last 5 Maddens (09 and 10) and I felt it was too arcadey then, now it's just a straight-up cartoon in how it plays. It's almost like a simulation version of Blitz at this point. Maybe I just have to get used to how things are and maybe it's just how the demo played, but it was not quite as fun as I remembered it being.
I don't really buy Madden games because the demos never do it for me. Maybe I need to ratchet up the difficulty, but on normal and the next level up, it seemed like it was impossible to throw a ball near Finley and not have him catch it. Too high a success rate on blitzes, too, for both teams. Meh.

wait what's the unbalanced schedule glitch?

basically, what could end up saying is let's say you alter your conferences and move some teams around. Like you send Texas A&M to the SEC. What could end happening is Texas A&M or somebody could play like 11 conference games and some of the teams will have played like 6 or 7. So your conference standings end up fucked over.

The only issue I'm having is that the Big XII (protected rivalries), Pac-12 (unprotected) and 16-team SEC (protected!) play 9 conference games while the retooled ACC (protected), Buffalo-less MAC (unprotected) and Big 10+2 (protected) all play 8.

Unsurprisingly the list given in the pre-release blog is apparently broken.

EA can take this fucking game and shove it up their asses. Score with 3 seconds left in the game to take the lead and on the kick off apparently my ENTIRE kickoff team gets a case of "head up the ass-itus" and lets the returner run up the side line untouched.

Enjoy that when it's a fucking 78 yard touchdown pass where your safeties stand still and just watch the guy run by on a streak to catch a touchdown pass.

Some early info regarding the scouting...

You see name, position, height, weight, college, age and projected round with no scouting.

Scouting specifics is as follows:

REGULAR SEASON SCOUTING - Unlock all common ratings for each position (For RB- SFA, SPM, JKM, CIT, SPC, THP, THA, SAC, MAC, DAC, RUN, PAC, TAK, POW, PMV, FMV, BSH, PUR, PRC, MCV, ZCV, PRS, PBK, RBK, IBL, KPW, KAC) for 15-20 players (depending on your scout hiring).

Basically, all non-key ratings for each position to give a vague baseline of where each player stands. OVR will be yellow with a ? to show that it is unknown, but that's the perception at the time. You can do this up to four times a season, choosing different players each time.
COMBINE SCOUTING - Unlocks some key attributes for each position (For RB- SPD, STR, AGI, ACC, RLS, JMP, RBS, RBF, PBS, PBF, INJ + whatever else you have already unlocked) to give an even better gauge on a player's OVR coming out of the draft.
PRO DAYS - Basically the same thing as Combine Scouting, just the opportunity to add more players.
INDIVIDUAL WORKOUTS - Up to 5 players, unlocks ALL remaining attributes + OVR/POT.

Free Agency Bidding...

Once you open the Free Agency bidding period, it is really just a three minute period of chaotic..chaos. It'd be wise to write down team needs before going in, and quickly browsing through each position as each player has an individual timer that starts when they receive their first offer...You can be outbid by teams, and whoever pays the most earns the rights to negotiate (new to Madden 12) a front-loaded, balanced, or back-loaded contract with that player.

Madden reviews are starting to come in. Nothing horrible (but really, who has the balls to give Madden a low score?), but nothing that convinces me to buy it after disliking the demo.

Maybe it was because we were playing it on an old TV after a game of NCAA, but the Madden demo made me motion sick and gave me a headache. I still won, though 8) 8) 8)

From what I have been reading from the some reviews, the franchise interface is clunky. The teams still make draft picks and trades that make no sense. There is a draft import bug that will make it so your draft class wasn't imported (which at the rate they are fixing NCAA, will be fixed at the end of September or October), the free agent bidding isn't much more than online auction MADDEN edition, and there is still some odd crazy stimulation stats going on.

Oh and AI teams still won't fill needs or be wise with who to play so you could have your starting RB playing CB in the fourth quarter of the preseason.

In short? Same old great ideas with shitty execution with the hope they get it right the next season (which they never do).
Which is incredibly disappointing because I sold Madden 11. Oh well, no NFL this year.

It seems like the issue lies more in how/when you import the Draft Class. I've seen users at Operation Sports state they've had success with it when uploading after the players leaving in NCAA and importing after the preseason in Madden.

That all still makes me weary of future messes coming from this. I'm really disappointed. This was one of those EA trusting years and just damn, they bumbled and tried to do more than they could handle again.

Less is more with this. The old Free agency system did have bidding, all they had to do was make it like the needs from NCAA. If your franchise did not meet the needs that were seriously important, the guy wouldn't sign without a shitload of money or late in free agency offer me one year and I'll come there type of AI. And the draft with a well he's older so we might need to fill that gap since we don't have any serious needs the current guys fit and he is the best available not a kicker or fullback so we should go for it.

That's all I've wanted. Well that and the return of expansion mode but that will never happen unless the NFL allows it.

Importing draft classed works just fine, as long as you saved your class after the players leaving portion in NCAA, if you did it before that it seems not to work.

I don't know why NCAA gives you two choices to export your class, but as long as you do it the 2nd time it asks you after players leave the importing feature works just fine.

I think Madden plays a much better game out of the box than NCAA does. Set the game speed to slow or very slow though. The commentary is beyond awful though.

I traded in NCAA for Madden and I think I made the right choice, the fact that the first patch for NCAA is coming out for another week or two, and after Madden comes out ts crazy. The games been broken since day 1, and it's taken almost 2 months to get a patch out.

Honestly, they need to build Madden and NCAA right up from scratch. You can't just keep adding new stuff to the old framework and expect it to continue to work. Not in this day and age.

As far as gameplay goes, are there any improvements that Madden 12 makes over Madden 11?

I'm thinking of just repurchasing Madden 11 since I don't care about Franchise mode.

My shipment's gotten delayed (thanks Amazon for that release date shipping when I pre-ordered on July 3rd!) so I'll maybe get the game either tomorrow or Thursday at the latest.

Mine came from Amazon about 2:00 today. Immediately I went into online, just to get the roster update, but decided to play a game while I was there. Was tied 7-7 with the Eagles (pretty sure 80% of games are gonna have the Eagles involved this year) and then the game kicked my opponent out "for excessive grieving." heh.

I'm wondering if everyone gets the same 3 Madden Ultimate Team cards for playing the demo, I got Raji, Wallace, and Hawk.

For anyone with the game, check out the free agent QBs and RBs. EA has added some made up players, including a girl QB (although a video I saw online shows that she doesn't look like a woman in gameplay) and a rookie QB that looks at least 40 with a grey Jim Neidhart beard but is actually 21 years old according to the game.

They both have overall ratings better than JaMarcus Russel.

Also, Scott Rich is a veteran RB with 17 years experience.

Playing my first home game as the Bills, and after I connect with Stevie for a 36 yard score, the PA starts playing Shout! Pretty sure that wasn't in 11.

According to someone on gamefaqs, if you complain to amazon about not getting it today, they'll give you an extra $10 credit.

Deathly serious. The Bills CAN score TDs in Madden 12.

I know but the thought of throwing Fitzpatrick to Donald Jones touchdowns gives one pause

Donald Jones barely sees the field in my franchise so far. Madden has Brad Smith as QB, since that's what the Bills have him officially listed at. However he's god awful at it, so I moved him back to WR, and as a result..no Donald Jones on most plays!

Just a few more thoughts:

In Madden Moments, it's a nice touch that despite having updated rosters, each moment seems to keep the old rosters from the actual games last season. So when doing the Jets/Colts moment, Braylon and Cotchery are there, among others, instead of Plax and Mason. Another small, but nice, thing is that they've apparently recorded the stats from each actual game up to the start of each moment, so a WR will start with however many catches he had up to that point, as opposed to hearing the commentary say something like, "Santonio Holmes has been shut down so far, that's his first catch!" despite there being 40 seconds left in the game.

Commentary seems to be about 95% the same as lines as last year. I wasn't expecting much, but you can only hear Collinsworth tell the same stories so many times. It's also annoying that they often call players by their number instead of saying their names. On the plus side, I read somewhere that Gus Johnson's "He's got running away from the cops speed!" line is in, but I have yet to really break any big runs to hear it.

Haven't touched Franchise yet, and I'll probably wait another week or so until final rosters for the season take shape and we get more roster updates.
