Something pretty wild could happen this weekend, as the top two films may be Japanese films as Godzilla: Minus One and The new Miyazaki movie The Boy And The Heron battle it out.

Really amazing and cool to see.
The new Hunger Games movie might end up getting the no 2 spot, though "Godzilla: Minus One" (which if you haven't seen yet-do so already, it's amazing) is expected to take third place with only a 31% drop, and is now the biggest live action Japanese language movie in US history. To think, when I saw "Princess Mononoke" in theaters twenty something years ago, there were only a few people in the theater. I know Anime is big right now, but the idea of Miyazaki having the top movie in America would've seemed alien years ago, so it's great to see. Japan is kicking Hollywood's ass at the moment.

Also, the Beyonce concert movie is expected to take a big drop to number five. I don't really listen to her (nowadays, the main type of current music I listen to outside of Metal is Hip-Hop), but damn.

This is the first time in history two Japanese films are in the top 3, let alone the top 10-plus "Godzilla" making 1.3 million more than projected. Also the first no 1 debut for a Miyazaki film in the US. Also some good numbers for "Poor Things", which Fox (and therefore also Disney) seem to be promoting heavily (it looks great, and I like it's director). I have no idea what "Waitress: The Musical" is, and ouch for "Renaissance"

Yeah Beyonce dropped like a rock after the respectable opening. I had a feeling. She just doesn't have the buzz of Taylor Swift in 2023. But, I wasn't expecting a 77% drop though.

I know "The Marvels" is a bomb and whatnot, but it feels weird seeing a superhero movie not only out of the top 10, but not even making at least a million in the box office this week.

You don’t remember the movie “Waitress”? A lovely rom com from about 15 years ago? Well it got a broadway musical treatment that was very successful and now they made a movie off the musical version.

I've never seen a film in the series, but shout out to this new Hunger Games movie. It actually has a respectable budget for a blockbuster these days in 100 million, and is showing great staying power. This franchise seems to still have some life.

It will be interesting to see how Godzilla holds up. The only stiff competition is Wonka this coming weekend then Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom along with The Iron Claw (which I'm curious to see how it does for being an A24 film + wrestling biopic).

TCP has a hell of a cast and I know the book & 1985 movie (which made $268 Million adjusted for inflation) are still very well regarded. It will be interesting to see what the audience's word of mouth is given its demographic and it leaning more into the magic realism/musical aspect compared to the original film.

"Wonka" also made $150 million overseas, and the new "Hunger Games" is at $300 million overseas. "Godzilla" has made more than it's $15 million budget back and has made $60 million overseas. Also, some good numbers for "Poor Things".

I'm seeing Poor Things on Saturday and I'm very excited (maybe my most anticipated since Last Night in Soho or Neon Demon tbh that wasn't a "big blockbuster" type movie).

The Hunger Games seems to be kind of getting that push ala GOTG 3/Elemental where it's getting word-of-mouth momentum keeping it upwards rather than "so okay, it's average" or "it sucks, don't bother" type reviews that a lot of middling movies have gotten that end up dooming them almost immediately.

I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but one of the reasons I think the new "Avatar" movie did so well is that you aren't being bombarded by "Avatar" content and that it had been a while since the first one. It's also been a while since the last "Hunger Games" movie, and that has a passionate audience beyond the movies since the books are also very popular. There's a difference between this and Disney constantly releasing Marvel movies and Disney+ exclusive Marvel shows to a point where the amount of content becomes overwhelming and plays a part in the sudden large disinterest in superhero movies.

Nothing of value got released for months due to strikes

I used to go two times a week and I’ve probably been three times since August.

Poor Things is still averaging $2,000+ per theater going into its wider release. Will be interesting to see its final weekend numbers.

Wonka looks like it will already eclipse $50 Million domestically when Wednesday's numbers come in.

Weekend numbers are in early (I'll always think it's a little weird that they include Sunday numbers releasing the "weekend numbers" early on Sunday morning but whatever). Kind of a soft weekend, as expected with Sunday being Christmas Eve and Monday being Christmas. I think we'll have a better idea of the box office staying power next weekend and the weekend after.

Godzilla Minus One has made a crazy $40 Million domestically. Has an outside shot at finishing around $50 Million if it can stay in enough theaters through the next month. Trolls Band Together has not only outgrossed The Marvels by almost $10 Million domestically (hilarious to me) but should finish above $95 Million which is its estimated budget.

The battle between Wonka and Aquaman is going to be an interesting one. Aquaman has a $200+ Million budget whereas Wonka was around $125 but is already closing in on $200 Million worldwide after just 2 weeks. I can see The Color Purple hurting Aquaman's box office more than Wonka's because kids can carry Wonka more with repeat viewings IMO.

Ouch for "Aquaman". "Migration"...I feel like with some exceptions ("Trolls", "Spiderverse" and "Elemental") family animated movies have been suffering (it's not just a Disney thing), probably because families usually wait for them to be on demand since it's a cheaper option than spending money on tickets.

Good for "The Iron Claw",

Good for "The Iron Claw",
I find late December to usually be pretty soft (unless you're a Star Wars Movie)... so I'm not putting a ton of stock in Aquaman's opening numbers this weekend but I don't think it's a great sign either.

2019 was buoyed by Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opening to $177.38 Million. Cats was a colossal flop at just $6 Million and Jumanji: The Next Level barely cleared $26 Million in its 2nd Week.
2018 saw Aquaman open to $67 Million [the equivalent of $88.83 Million in 2023] with Mary Poppins Returns (does anybody remember this?!?) and Bumblebee clearing $21 Million
2017 was buoyed by Stars Wars: The Last Jedi raking in $71.5 Million after opening with a monstrous $220 Million the weekend before. Jumanji: Welcome to the Next Level outdid expectations IIRC with $36 Million, Pitch Perfect 3 almost hit $20 Million, but The Greatest Showman underwhelmed at just $8.8 Million

I agree that streaming, for good and bad, has entirely changed the movie theater landscape. There will be exceptions such as Barbie and Super Mario Bros. but I don't think it's a coincidence that both of those movies are very kid-friendly and can tap into that repeat demographic. I only saw Poor Things because I'd been waiting 8 months for it to release to theaters otherwise I would've happily waited for it to hit streaming.

One other thing that's I think under the radar is the ability to rent/buy at a much cheaper cost. You can "rent" a movie for $5.99 at home after 2-3 weeks when it becomes available to streaming and say you get a box of theater candy or popcorn, that's still way cheaper than seeing the movie solo let alone with a family. Tie in the lack of parking, driving + gas $$, dealing with people on their phones or talking, being able to watch it captioned if so desired, etc.

Color Purple has dropped like a rock after the huge opening day. It's fallen to 4th during the last two days and behind Aquaman 2 and Migration. I thought for sure with the good audience scores and big opening day, that it would dominate the Holiday weekends. It went from 18 million on Monday, to 7 million on Tuesday, then 3.9 million on Wednesday.

Kind of crazy.

Both Wonka and Migration seem to be riding good word of mouth and are making more money as the days get into New Year's Weekend. Migration has outdone(!) it's opening Friday on a per-theater basis for Tuesday & Wednesday, which is wild.

Anyone But You seems like a minor hit as well. It's been grossing a little more every day since Christmas. Trailer looked bad, but the reviews are decent. Sex appeal can still sell, since the main draw is it being a R rated raunchy comedy with "graphic nudity", and two sexy stars in Sydney Sweeney/Glen Powell.
