So, are we calling John Wick 4 a "bust" because it's "only" made $350 million worldwide, or do we reserve the "bust" label for the franchises that the fuckboys don't like?

I wouldn't know: the last R-rated movie I watched was Deadpool 2, and the next R-rated movie I watch will probably be Deadpool 3.

Nah cause the Wick movies aren’t as expensive as capeshit.

Also it’s the most successful John Wick movie so how is it a failure? How many R Rated movies are there making $350 million?

Also, the "John Wick" franchise is one of those things where most people in general seem to enjoy on some level. You rarely if ever see any negative discourse around them outside of the minority of "violence in movies is bad" idiots, and the fact they have all been good helps. The new one and "Evil Dead Rise" are the most fun I've had in a theater since "The Suicide Squad"

its budgets was 100 million and it's the highest grossing movie of the franchise and 5th highest grossing of the year. For an R movie that's really great.

For reference, the highest domestic grossing R rated film of 2022 was Nope which brought in 123 million.

In 2019, the last “traditional” year before pandemic it was Joker with 333 million.

For amusement, the all time record is Passion of the Christ just edging out Deadpool.

Regardless of what John Wick 4 made nobody would criticize it because it was actually good. There's no sense of diminishing returns there and you don't feel like something is just a setup for some other movie. If you want to see extremely long martial arts sequences you don't get better than this. The fat guy fight was awesome as shit

Movie budgets (and to a lesser extent, marketing costs) matter precisely for this reason.

Movie A: $100 Million budget + let's say $50 Million marketing making $350 Million (at least) worldwide is a success.
Movie B: $250 Million budget + let's say $150 Million marketing making $350 Million worldwide is a flop because it's struggling to break even.

A movie like Scream VI is a huge success because its budget was only $35 Million with a low marketing cost and it's made $168.5 Million worldwide thus far. Compare that to a solid movie like Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves which had a $150 Million budget with low marketing costs and that's only made $177.98 Million worldwide thus far. Yes, the latter has made more money from a black & white look but compared to the budget it's barely broken even.

Fine, I'll stipulate to not putting enough respect on the John Wick franchise. But maybe it's because I don't hang out around those corners of the internet, but I still don't see anybody fixing their lips to call Dungeons and Dragons a "flop" or a "bust," despite its apparently underwhelming performance. Such labels still seem to be reserved for the franchises that a particular type of person wants to see fail.

DnD was definitely a bust, they went way too far on certain kinds of elements that make people not want to watch a movie. It's too corny.

D and D cost 150 million and has made 178 Million in 3 weeks. It bombed in China so it probably will end up as a letdown for sure.

What movies/franchises are you talking about.

I didn’t even realize there was a ROTJ rerelease until I looked up movie listings this weekend. Considering how big of a deal box office totals are these days, you think they would have advertised it more to try and pad their numbers.

Damn the numbers on the George Foreman biopic are pretty brutal. I thought the trailer looked pretty good but maybe it was churchy for the sports movie folks and too sporty for the Jesus movie folks.

The Foreman movie looks super generic. I was shocked seeing it was on over 3,000 screens with that finish.

George Foreman’s life story is super interesting but I don’t think everyone necessarily knows his life story is super interesting beyond “LOL he won a World Title when he was old and came up with a lean meat grilling machine even though he is fat.”

Hopefully they don't leave out his Meineke commercials.

Curious how Sisu does... the trailer made it look great but I haven't heard much from a word of mouth perspective.
I ended up seeing it Saturday in Chicago and its fuckin balls to the wall in your face excellence. Much more gorier than expected, for sure. But every kill and every fucked up moment was worth it. It has moments that feel like a John Wick meets Mad Max meets Inglorious Bastards, but on the other hand, this is a uniquely excellent film that stands on its' own for sure. While the story is pretty basic, there's lots of paying off moments all across the board.

"Guardians" didn't do as good as projected, but I think it's safe to say it's gonna be a hit. Also, "Evil Dead Rise" made over $100 million overeseas.

"Love Again" played in my theater, and I had no idea what it was until I looked it up afterwards. It's apparently the acting debut of Celine Dion, and it's not exactly a hit with critics.

This seems like a candidate for the Bad Movies Thread but appears to be a much bigger hit with the type of rom-com audience that goes into it with certain expectations (94% Audience score on RT). IMDB users have given it a 6.1 so it just seems like critics who want/expect something more than what the film intends to give them vs. the audience kind of just getting what they want out of it and not wanting (or needing) more than that.

As somebody who's watched a ton of Anime centering around certain premises, sometimes I just want that Anime to deliver the basics of the premise, have good enough animation, and be a breezy watch instead of being a Top 20 Anime Ever delivery. The former is what it sounds like Love Again does for the rom-com crowd. Delivers the basics in a breezy, somewhat forgettable watch no different from countless decent Hallmark rom-coms.

My theater actually got "Blackberry", so I'm hoping to see it before it'll likely be gone Friday. Also, "Guardians" didn't have a big drop off, and is Marvel's best second weekend numbers since "No Way Home"

SMB still putting up what would be solid opening weekend numbers into its 6th week is an impressive carryover...
